Promotional Products ? Perth Marketing Experts Provide Top 3 Cost ...

Marketing is an important aspect of any business and a huge budget is often allotted for it to be done efficiently and effectively. It enhances a brand, therefore offering more profitable opportunities. The ads people see on TV, as well as the posters, fliers and brochures given out freely are just some of the tools that aid marketing efforts.
Promotional products, such as the ones mentioned above are incredibly effective in increasing the market?s awareness about a business. Be they small or seemingly trivial things, they are great for a business?s promotional activities. However, to maximise the benefits of this important marketing strategy, it?s important to select the best-selling and reviewed most effective promotional items. In this article, the top 3 promotional products, Perth marketing experts recommend will be discussed.

Awareness bracelets: They are also called silicone bracelets and are made from colourful silicone which a lot of people are greatly fond of. To promote a movement or a business, these bracelets are often given out for free. They?re very economical to produce especially when they?re purchased in bulk and there are several styles to choose from when it comes to size, colours and print. It?s easy to print a business?s slogan and other information on the band. These days, silicone bracelets are complimented by silicone rings like the ones?worn to promote breast cancer awareness.

Pens and pencils: Everybody needs a writing instrument and businesses capitalise on this to accomplish their promotional efforts. Pens and pencils are very cost-efficient and useful; that?s why they still remain in the list of top-ranking promotional products. They can be given away for free or they can come in a giveaway loot bag for important events. If a business is more sophisticated compared to most, it can make use of a more unique design that?s worth paying for. Museums and parks like SeaWorld, Universal Studios and Adventure World actually generate a lot of money from promotional pens and pencils for sale at their gift shops, mainly because they?re very affordable and they really invest on the design of these items.

Drinking bottles: They are very much in demand these days since people are trying to decrease their carbon footprint. Instead of purchasing a new bottle of water often, a lot of folks are choosing to bring drinking bottles that they can refill at water fountains. As promotional products, bottles have a large surface on which to place a logo and other details, and they are often carried around, so there?s more exposure for the brand. The nice thing about them as well is that they last people a long time, so they?re very worthy promotional investments.
There you have it, the top 3 cost-effective promotional products Perth marketing experts have picked. They?re economical, useful and, best of all, they get the job of promoting a business brand properly done.

Romney to visit Poland WWII site, meet Lech Walesa

JERUSALEM (AP) ? U.S. presidential hopeful Mitt Romney heads to Poland on Monday, where he will visit the site of the first shots fired in World War II and pay tribute to the country's anti-communist movement.

Romney plans to meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Gdansk (guh-DANSK) before heading to the Westerplatte memorial, where a German battleship shelled a Polish military outpost in 1939.

Romney also plans to see former Polish President Lech Walesa (lek vah-WEHN'-sah) and visit the famed shipyard where the electrician began an anti-government movement in the 1970s.

Romney is expected to receive a warm reception in the conservative, Catholic country. Last year, when President Barack Obama traveled to Poland, the local press reported that Walesa had refused to meet with Obama.

PFT: Fitzgerald unfazed by QB competition

nfl_g_snoopdog_400Getty Images

Jets rookie WR Stephen Hill is drawing praise for doing a lot of what he likely will be doing this year:? blocking.

Pats WR Donte? Stallworth returns to New England having ?matured as a player, matured as a person.?? (Killing a guy while driving a car under the influence tends to do that.)

The goal for getting a new lease in place for the Bills officially has been moved to the end of the year.

When it comes to hairstyles, Dolphins rookies are sporting the modified Cruella deVille.

With WR Antonio Brown and not WR Mike Wallace getting a new contract from the Steelers, Snoop Dogg may need an explanation.

Browns DT Ahtyba Rubin is recovering from a procedure to repair a slight pelvic tear.

Bengals LB Brandon Joiner is on the reserve/did not report list for a good reason; he?s serving a three-year prison sentence in Texas.? (Shouldn?t they have traded him to the Lions by now?)

Is Michael Oher finally ready to play left tackle?? (With Bryant McKinnie AWOL, it may not matter.)

The Jaguars have released FB Naufahu Tahi.? (Brad Childress wants to know why they didn?t they just make him the extra man on the roster.)

Colts coach Chuck Pagano?s first training camp as head coach opens on Saturday.

Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck put business first in the offseason; ?I played it more safe and I didn?t really travel,? Hasselbeck said. ?I didn?t really go anywhere for fun.? Everywhere I went, I had a purpose.? If I was going somewhere, then throwing and working out was priority No. 1 all the time.?

Texans LB Connor Barwin has traded in the Cosmo Kramer for the Gary Kubiak.

A jury has awarded $5.2 million against Chargers doctor David Chao for prescribing a cold-therapy device after knee surgery; Chao has now been on the wrong end of multiple malpractice cases.? (But, please, keep letting him provide care to elite professional athletes.)

Broncos LB Von Miller thinks that the team?s seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons is ?laid back?; Jack Del Rio says Miller and the rest of the defense are in for a surprise.

The Torn ACL Trio (Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki) all practiced for the Chiefs on Friday; ?I feel I?ve got my swag back,? Charles said.

Here are five questions for the Raiders.

Our old pal (and former PFT contributor) Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com tears into Cowboys WR Dez Bryant for keeping his mouth shut in the wake of his recent arrest.

Giants co-owner John Mara was surprised by the number of media at training camp: ??I can?t believe so many of you are here.? Tebow isn?t here.?

Former Redskins QB Colt Brennan has been arrested in Hawaii for suspicion of drunk driving and drug possession.

Eagles TE Brent Celek (knee) is expected to miss only a few days.

A lawsuit against former Vikings WR and current ESPN analyst Cris Carter involving a rap-song investment gone bad contends that Carter was close to becoming the Alabama receivers coach in 2011.? (It?s unknown whether Carter ever declared, ?I?m not going to be the Alabama receivers coach.?)

Bears K Robbie Gould thinks it would be a ?big risk? for the team to let LB Brian Urlacher become a free agent.? (It also would be a ?big risk? for the Bears to make personnel decisions based on the advice of a kicker.)

Packers LT Marshall Newhouse is gaining confidence via praise from his coach ? and practice against LB Clay Matthews.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson apparently can?t walk down the street in Mexico.? (Sergio Mendes can sympathize.)

Newly re-signed Falcons LB Mike Peterson is now known as ?Unc?; ?I?m everybody?s uncle around here now,? Peterson said.

Saints CB Patrick Robinson made the play of the day on Friday, stealing a Drew Brees pass away from TE Jimmy Graham.

Falcons RB Jason Snelling wants more opportunities on offense.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera hopes increased competition will create increased urgency in training camp; among other things, both kicking positions are up for grabs.

The mentor of 49ers LB Aldon Smith says that his off-field problems will be a ?small blip on his radar.?? (If getting stabbed twice is a small blip on the radar, that?s a big-ass radar.)

The Cardinals are holding their annual Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday.? (QB Kevin Kolb may want to wear ear plugs.)

Rams TE Michael Hoomanawanui is able to practice after suffering a torn ACL on November 13.

Will the Seahawks quarterback competition be reduced from three to two?? ?The answer is yes, I guess,? coach Pete Carroll said.? ?You?re just going to have to suck it up and wait.?

Chevron to invest $2 billion in Congo-Angola oil field

BRAZZAVILLE (Reuters) - Chevron Corp plans to invest $2 billion to develop its Lianzi oilfield straddling the maritime border between Republic of Congo and Angola, a company official said on Sunday.

"Production from the Lianzi field will begin in 2015 and investments will cost $2 billion," Katia Mounthault-Tatu, a Chevron spokeswoman, told Reuters.

State revenues from the field, which holds proven reserves of 70 million barrels, will be split 50-50 between Congo and Angola, the two countries confirmed in an agreement on Friday.

Congo produced 105 million barrels of crude oil last year. Angola pumps around 1.8 million barrels per day.

Poetry is still alive within me - Laban Erapu - Entertainment |monitor ...

In Summary

You must know him from his poems; ?An Elegy?, ?The Quilt of Giving? or ?I Beg You? from ?Poems from East Africa?, an anthology of poems edited by David Rubadiri and David Cook. Laban Erapu is Professor of Literature, Bishop Stuart University, Mbarara; an independent publishing consultant with East African Educational Publishers; and Managing Director/Chairman Designate with Creative Digital Productions Ltd, a new Film-making company. Beatrice Lamwaka spoke to him about his passion for writing.

How has your journey as a writer been like?
I started reading and writing at the age of seven. I used to compose love letters for the older boys who had realized that I had skills with words. Then, I didn?t attach value to my writing. While at Ntare School, I wrote poems that I cannot find. In 1963, I won the territorial English Essay Writing Competition organized by Brooke Bond and the Associated Tea Growers of East Africa.

The prize included books and an all-expenses paid trip to United Kingdom for me and my teacher in the company of similar parties from Kenya and Tanzania. I was the youngest in the group. For two weeks, we climbed mountains, we toured the United Kingdom and I had a wonderful time. This was the first time; I got something of monetary value for my writing. And it was the best gift for a senior four student who hadn?t travelled outside of Uganda.

I grew up writing poetry under the tutorship of Prof Timothy Wangusa; active writers club associated with David Rubadiri, Ali Mazrui, Henry Barlow, the late Prof David Cook and Margaret Macpherson that is when my skills were sharpened. While a student at Makerere University, I was the editor of Dhana Magazine and chief editor of the Makererean that is when I got interested in printing and publishing. Later, I was desk editor for The People Newspaper where I wrote lead articles.

In 1968, I won a Writing Competition for new writers sponsored by Oxford University Press. In addition to cash and book prizes for me and my school, the award also included the publication of my first novel, Restless Feet.
Soon after, I was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship by the British Council to study for a Masters degree at Edinburgh University 1969-1971.

One of the great moments in my writing career was working with Ngugi Wa Thiong?o. As a reader of manuscript for Heinemann Educational Publishers, I read The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, Petals of Blood and I Will Marry When I Want which inspired me to write my PhD thesis on his writing.

Where do you get ideas to write your stories?
Stories create themselves and write themselves. The ideas come nearly complete. I see an opportunity to take an adventure. I have a clear picture of the beginning of the journey, clear picture of what it will take me through and where it will culminate the ending. Once I start, the story takes over my life. I am transported into the setting which I see in details. I am the invisible eye which sees the characters, hears them and lives with them as they take me through their stories.
At that point, I don?t know that milestone go as the story unfolds taking twists and turns that I never anticipated, sometimes I am taking me by surprise, sometimes making me nod in agreement. Sometimes, I am unaware of my existence of the story and I become a mere scribe that is transcribing a story that is not my own but my own characters. That goes on until the story is over and I become my own person. I talk about this as a kind of madness that I realise that to be a creative writer necessitate loosing oneself and surrendering entirely to that creative impact.

Where do you find time to write?
Most people say they have stories but they don?t have time to write.
I always find the time to write. I cannot let the opportunity I have go to waste. It is until I have finished writing a piece that I find time to do something else. The piece becomes a priority in my life.

Do you still write poetry?
Poetry is still alive with me; ?I Beg You? has since been re-written and forced me to issue a subsequent poem. Poems are part of my life and I look through them. They are not over 40 years old but rather part of my ongoing existence. Anyone who looks at my poems as old; would he regard Hamlet by Shakespeare as older? Characters in literature are timeless and ageless.

Which writers have influenced your writing?
I read extensively. I read all kinds of novels including thrillers. I don?t try to write like any writer. I write my stories as they come to me. The stories inform my writing level of perfection as other writers have. A writer must always aim for perfection. The writing must be convincing and worth reading. I must be honest with myself as a storyteller and avoid mediocrity.

What advice do you have for young Ugandan writers?
Writers should keep writing. Writing is a craft that need to be developed. Writers shouldn?t be deterred by reviewers and publishers, they should let their creative impulse lead on to more and more experiment in creative writing. Most writers who persist will eventually get published. Writing is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.

What kind of books do you read?
I read any kind of novel that comes my way. I have read a number of series based on the French Revolution, classics, American literature, West Indies and Caribbean literature, European literature among others. I have a deep background in literature. If a book was worth writing then it?s worth reading. Time is the only factor that prevents me from reading; otherwise, I would read all books.

What are you working on?
I am shooting a film script of my friend and my brother?s book, Song of Lawino by Okot p?Bitek. This is polyphony of voices and a representation of Acholi culture. I am looking for funding now.

What should be government?s role in this regard?
The government should create a supportive environment, assist in advertising in its publicity machines within tourism and support it financially in as basic a manner as in the salary of at least 2 of the key administrators (the Festival Director and the Marketing Manager) for they make the festival happen.
The government pours in millions to support the Tourist Board but no money to ZIFF which can actually show the Tsh I.5 billion we bring to the economy.

Are Africans enthusiastic about festivals?
Very much so. ZIFF reaches over 250,000 people. It is in the manner you package the event that will ensure local support. By creating a mzungu event in an African environment you will only ensure the demise of the colourful and creative energies of the local people and organisers.

Things I've Learned in 11 Years of Marriage - The Rebel Chick

Today is my 11 year anniversary?

Honestly, sometimes it feels like we?ve been married forever and other days, it feels like I just met my husband last week.

While our marriage is not perfect by any means, it is pretty damn awesome and I am proud of what we?ve been able to accomplish together over the last decade. We?ve seen couples meet and break up, friends get married and divorced, and that we?ve somehow managed to not become one of those divorce statistics sometimes surprises me!

I?d be lying if I said that our marriage has never had problems. Anyone who?s been together for a lengthy amount of time knows that like all relationships, marriage is really hard work.

So, what?s my secret?

Sheer determination.?

No, seriously. When we?ve hit a rough patch, we didn?t give up. When my husband and I were at odds, grew bored, or just plain old got stuck in a rut, we didn?t accept it as the end of our relationship. We saw it as a phase in our relationship. When we took those marriage vows, we meant them, and we never lost sight of that commitment.

While there are many reasons why relationships don?t work out ? lying, cheating, addictions, betrayal ? those haven?t been our issues. We have faced the normal, everyday issues that I think are just as dangerous to a marriage, as they can lead the way to those issues.

I wanted to share a few of the lessons I?ve learned in these past 11 years of marriage?

1. Accept that people change over time.

It seems that I am always hearing people complain that their significant other has changed since they met, since they got married, since they had children, etc. I think it?s unrealistic to think that the person you marry will stay exactly the same for the rest of their lives. When I met my husband, he enjoyed going out, but as he?s gotten older, he no longer enjoys being a night owl. Sure, he does the occasional happy hour or birthday party ? but he?s really a bit of a homebody.

I had a hard time with it at first, but then I slowly got used to it. I still go out on occasion with the girls, but I learned to make peace with the fact that our partying life was over. Instead of fighting that change, when I saw that it wasn?t doing any good, I accepted it.

Now?when my friends call at 9 to ask me to come out with them, I laugh, because I?m already in my pajamas!

And I?ve changed as well ? probably even more than my husband! While I was once that workaholic who spent 50+ hours in the office, climbing the corporate ladder, I?m now a housewife ? and my husband completely supported that decision and happily absorbed 100% of the financial responsibility for our family.

2. Never take your significant other for granted.

It can be too easy to lose appreciation for someone when they?ve been around for a long time. I?ve heard the complaint so often: ?They take me for granted? and I?ve experienced that myself. It?s never fun to realize that the most important person in your life doesn?t appreciate your awesomeness.

How do you avoid that? Honestly, I?m not quite sure.

I think that you have to make a conscious decision to appreciate your significant other on a daily basis.

If you don?t think your spouse is doing anything fantastic for you, think again. Do they go to work every day to earn an income to support your family? Well, that?s pretty damn awesome. Does your spouse offer to make dinner when you?ve had a busy day? That?s pretty kick ass.

If you think your spouse doesn?t appreciate you, TELL THEM. About 5 years into our marriage, I felt unappreciated and taken for granted. We had long talks about it, and I realized that he DID appreciate me, he just felt that we were past the point that he needed to tell me. He thought I knew. I needed verbal affirmations to feel loved and appreciated and once I explained my feelings, he did a much better job of making me feel special and important on a regular basis. And honestly, I was guilty as well, he just wasn?t verbal about it. He made me realize that I was so busy feeling unappreciated that I stopped telling him how much I appreciated him.

3. Nothing is as important as communication.?

Honesty is the key to a successful marriage. I think honesty is the most important thing ? every problem can be avoided, or fixed, with honesty.?When we have had issues in our marriage, it was open and honest communication that has rectified the situation.

Around the 7 year mark, we went through that phase in our marriage where we began growing apart. We married at 23 and 24, and by the time we hit 30, we were different people. I felt it, he felt it, and for a while, neither of us wanted to address it. We pretended like it wasn?t happening, hoping that it would go away and that the situation would fix itself.

It didn?t.

Once we were honest and talked about how we felt, we realized that we needed a break. We needed to get away from our jobs, leave our daughter at home with grandma, and go off and reconnect. We took a week-long vacation in Western North Carolina ? in a remote area in the mountains with no one else around, no internet, no cell phone, no cable?and we just spent an entire week together.

If we had not been honest with each other about what was happening, our marriage would have been doomed.

4. Make time for each other.?

Once my husband and I took that vacation together, we realized that we hadn?t been spending any time together. We were always together, but never alone ? and this is a problem that most parents face.

We take regular vacations together now, aside from our family vacations. We do date nights without my daughter. When she goes off to visit her grandparents and aunts and uncles, we take full advantage of that time and go to the movies, go out to eat ? the point is, we do activities together. Just us, no friends, no coworkers, no family ? we just concentrate on each other.

If you aren?t able to have babysitters, go meet your spouse for lunch during the workday. Even if you can only manage it once a month, it will make a difference.

?

I realize that this isn?t your usual ?It?s my anniversary!!? blog post?but whenever I tell people how long I?ve been married, they are always shocked because frankly, most marriages don?t last this long anymore.

Do you have any pointers for couples on how to make their relationship last? I?d love to hear them!

How To Become A Successful Online Internet Marketing Entrepreneur

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of building a profitable home business is how easy it would be. Just sit at your computer click a few buttons and wa-la you have a home business made to order. Physically that is easy. However now you have to make it profitable.

Here are three things that you want to make sure of when you are getting started that I think you will agree are of most importance to your success.

First: Make sure the organization or company that you get involved with has an excellent training, support and communication system in place to help you become acclimated with how it all works. The business its self, the product that will be offered, with training and support to help move you from being a beginner to a successful money making home business owner as soon as possible.

Second: Never settle for less than you deserve. Find a company or opportunity that has a product that pays high commissions and will create long-term residual income. Find a business that does not require thousands of monthly sales to achieve making money on a large scale. Create the financial freedom and independence that you are looking for with the right business.

Third: Your business offer has to be something that you believe in. Something that you know will benefit all whom it affects. The product that you offer has to have a real benefit for the prospect. It has to have a considerable level of hope for gain. No business will long endure unless it benefits all whom it affects.

There you have it, three things that any successful business will need to stand the test of time. With all the internet commotion out there about making thousands of dollars per month quickly and easily, you might want to ask yourself. Has starting and owning a successful business and becoming financially independent ever really been easy for anyone? It actually takes a little hard work and a lot of commitment to become successful at internet marketing.

If you are willing to work a little and give it, the commitment it deserves you can become successful at owning and operating your own internet marketing business. How do I know this? I know because I am seeing it done everyday by normal everyday people.

You can be what you will to be, and you can do what you will to do.

San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Explaining Nursing Home ...

When people become severely, chronically ill or they simply advance
in age, they tend to encounter the need for ongoing care with regards to
their daily routines. Many times, these needs are met by moving into an
assisted living center despite the fact that this is often not a happy
or exciting decision for that resident. No one wants to give up the
freedoms that most of us take for granted throughout most of our lives,
and many people who do make this decision regret it because they are
mistreated in these settings.

Below you will find a brief overview of the specifics regarding two
different types of mistreatment that tend to occur in an assisted living
center: nursing home negligence and nursing home abuse. Anyone who is
being mistreated or any family member who suspects that a loved one is
being subjected to this conduct needs to obtain the advice and guidance
of experienced San Diego personal injury lawyers as soon as possible.

Nursing Home Negligence Described

Nursing home negligence is conduct that can basically be described as
providing a substandard level of care that may or may not be
intentional. Basically, this legal claim can and often is made when the
level of ongoing care and oversight that was promised is not delivered.
Examples of results of nursing home negligence can include the
development of bed sores from not being turned enough for patients who
are immobile, the development of sickness when medications are not
provided in a regular manner and the suffering of physical injuries when
a resident is not properly supervised.

Nursing Home Abuse Described

Nursing home abuse is generally considered to be more egregious
conduct, and that?s likely because there is some level of intent that is
often present in the minds of the people who are doling out this abuse.
Specifically, people who suffer from abuse in nursing homes can be
physically abused, emotionally abused, financially abused and even
sexually abused. Any or all of these forms of abuse obviously lead to an
enormous level of harm that can manifest itself by way of physical
injuries, emotional trauma, financial loss or an increased level of
severity of sickness that was already being endured by the resident when
he or she moved into the facility.

How San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Can Help

When someone is being neglected and/or abused while living in an
assisted living center, it can be difficult for family members to catch
on to what?s happening. That?s because it?s rare that the person being
mistreated will say something and not all injuries that are suffered are
obvious. Therefore, people need to trust their instincts and to take
action if they suspect something is wrong.

If you or someone you love is being mistreated while living in an assisted living center, you need to seek the help of San Diego personal injury lawyers who have been fighting for the rights of clients for many years. Contact the Mitchell | Gilleon Law Firm today to schedule a free initial consultation.

The annual Cornwall Food and Drink Festival Goes Green ...

Cornwall's annual food and drink festival is set to focus on the environment

The Cornwall Food and Drink Festival is returning in September for its ninth consecutive year with a new focus on the environment.

This year the organisers have teamed up with ?Good Energy? ? the UK?s only renewable electricity supplier, who will be sponsoring the Chef?s Theatre.

Good Energy sources around one third of its electricity from Cornish wind, sunlight and water-power, with figures showing around 30% of the average household?s electricity consumption takes place in the kitchen.? Renowned ?green chef? Arthur Potts-Dawson will be at the event, sharing steps everybody can take to reduce the environmental impact of the choices they make in buying, storing and cooking food.

The author of?Eat Your Veg?will also show that local, natural and sustainable food is low on carbon and high on taste, with two inspirational recipe demonstrations. He will be sharing tips and ideas about how to reduce energy use in the kitchen, minimise waste, and source seasonal local ingredients, that haven?t travelled for miles to get to your plate.

The annual event which sees foodies travel from near and far will notice some other changes which are all being put in place in an attempt to reduce environmental waste. This year the festival will be paperless, the programme will be available online and mobile friendly vouchers will be used. Exhibitors are being encouraged to look at a ?reduce, reuse and recycle? philosophy and will be given advice on how to minimise waste.

Organisers are also asking visitors to think about their journey to the festival, encouraging people to walk, cycle or use public transport wherever possible.

Ruth Huxley, festival organiser and director of Cornwall Food & Drink, said: ?We represent a huge sector that is responsible for large amounts of waste, emissions and energy use. New drug could treat Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis and brain injury

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? A new class of drug developed at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine shows early promise of being a one-size-fits-all therapy for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury by reducing inflammation in the brain.

Northwestern has recently been issued patents to cover this new drug class and has licensed the commercial development to a biotech company that has recently completed the first human Phase 1 clinical trial for the drug.

The drugs in this class target a particular type of brain inflammation, which is a common denominator in these neurological diseases and in traumatic brain injury and stroke. This brain inflammation, also called neuroinflammation, is increasingly believed to play a major role in the progressive damage characteristic of these chronic diseases and brain injuries.

By addressing brain inflammation, the new class of drugs -- represented by MW151 and MW189 -- offers an entirely different therapeutic approach to Alzheimer's than current ones being tested to prevent the development of beta amyloid plaques in the brain. The plaques are an indicator of the disease but not a proven cause.

A new preclinical study published July 24 in the Journal of Neuroscience, reports that when one of the new Northwestern drugs is given to a mouse genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer's, it prevents the development of the full-blown disease. The study, from Northwestern's Feinberg School and the University of Kentucky, identifies the optimal therapeutic time window for administering the drug, which is taken orally and easily crosses the blood-brain barrier.

"This could become part of a collection of drugs you could use to prevent the development of Alzheimer's," said D. Martin Watterson, a professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry at the Feinberg School, whose lab developed the drug. He is a coauthor of the study.

In previous animal studies, the same drug reduced the neurological damage caused by closed-head traumatic brain injury and inhibited the development of a multiple sclerosis-like disease. In these diseases as well as in Alzheimer's, the studies show the therapy time window is critical.

MW151 and MW189 work by preventing the damaging overproduction of brain proteins called proinflammatory cytokines. Scientists now believe overproduction of these proteins contributes to the development of many degenerative neurological diseases as well as to the neurological damage caused by traumatic brain injury and stroke.

When too many of the cytokines are produced, the synapses of the brain begin to misfire. Eventually the entire organization of the brain falls into disarray, like a computer failing. The neurons lose their connections with each other and can eventually die. The resulting damage in the cortex and hippocampus can compromise memory and decision-making.

"In Alzheimer's disease, many people now view the progression from mild cognitive impairment to full-blown Alzheimer's as an indication of malfunctioning synapses, the pathways that allow neurons to talk to each other," said Watterson, the John G. Searle Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. "And high levels of proinflammatory cytokines can contribute to synaptic malfunction."

Because this harmful inflammatory mechanism also appears to be a major player in other neurodegenerative disorders in addition to Alzheimer's, the class of drugs represented by MW151 might hold bright potential as co-therapies for Parkinson's disease, frontotemporal dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, M.S. and the longer term complications of brain injury, Watterson said.

"We need more studies of therapeutic time windows in models of these other diseases so we can better plan future clinical trials," Watterson noted.

In the new study by Northwestern's Watterson and Linda Van Eldik, director of the University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, a mouse model of Alzheimer's received MW151 three times a week starting at six months of age, right at the time the proinflammatory cytokines began to rise. This would be the comparable stage when a human patient would begin to experience mild cognitive impairment.

When the mice brains were later evaluated at 11 months (at a time when disease pathology is usually present), cytokine levels in the mice receiving the drug were restored to normal levels and their synapses were functioning normally. The inflammatory cytokine levels of the mice not receiving the drug, however, were still at abnormally high levels, and the mice had misfiring synapses.

"The drug protected against the damage associated with learning and memory impairment," Van Eldik noted. "Giving this drug before Alzheimer's memory changes are at a late stage may be a promising future approach to therapy."

Drug Inhibits Multiple Sclerosis Development

In M.S., overproduction of the proinflammatory cytokines damage the central nervous system and the brain. The proteins directly or indirectly destroy the insulation or coverings of the nerve cells that transmit signals down the spinal cord. When the insulation is stripped, messages aren't properly conducted down the spinal cord.

When mice that were induced to develop an M.S.-like disease received MW151 orally, they did not develop disease as severe.

"We inhibited the development of the disease," said William Karpus, the Marie A. Fleming Research Professor of Pathology at the Feinberg School. "Now we need to learn if the drug can prevent relapses of M.S." That study is ongoing in mice and the results will determine whether a patient trial will be planned.

The only current oral drug treatment for M.S. acts at the level of the lymph nodes, Karpus said. Because the brain is the site of the inflammation and damage, a drug that works in the brain is an ideal therapy.

Drug Protects Brain After Traumatic Brain Injury

After a traumatic brain injury, the glia cells in the brain become hyperactive and release a continuous cascade of proinflammatory cytokines that -- in the long term -- can result in cognitive impairment and epilepsy. As a result of this hyperactivity, researchers believe the brain is more susceptible to serious damage following a second neurological injury.

In a study with mice, Mark Wainright, M.D., professor of pediatric neurology at Northwestern's Feinberg School and a physician at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, showed that when MW151 is given during an early therapeutic window three to six hours after the injury, it blocks glial activation and prevents the flood of proinflammatory cytokines after a traumatic brain injury.

"If you took a drug like this early on after traumatic brain injury or a even a stroke, you could possibly prevent the long-term complications of that injury including the risk of seizures, cognitive impairment and, perhaps, mental health issues," Wainwright said.

Stroke also causes inflammation in the brain that may also be linked to long-term complications including epilepsy and cognitive deficits. As in traumatic brain injury, this inflammatory response is part of the recovery mechanisms used by the brain, so the use of brief and focused treatments like MW151 could prevent the harmful effects of inflammation while allowing the protective effects to occur unimpeded.

In another study, Wainwright showed MW151, when given after a traumatic brain injury, prevented the increased risk of epileptic seizures.

Using the Art of Tattooing to Cover Breast Cancer Scars [VIDEO]

mastectomy tattoo

YouTube

Tattoos have become very popular over the last few years and more and more women are getting them. It?s not for me but having had breast cancer, I ran across this story on a breast cancer site. It seems women who have had mastectomy surgery are getting the tattoos to cover their scars.

When you have a mastectomy you have a scar that goes from under one arm all the way across your chest to under your other arm. Then if you decide to have reconstruction you still have small scars on the sides, under the arms. Some women are choosing to cover those scars with art in the form of tattoos.

The art work is beautiful but as I said, not something I would choose, I will wear my scars proudly. I was given the gift of a second chance and that?s what those scars will forever remind me.

For more information on these tattoos check out Support the Fight Against Breast Cancer website.

Peter Robertson

Wilderness Society activist Peter Robertson said he welcomed the Prime Minister weighing into the gas hub debate.

His comments come after Julia Gillard said the proposed Kimberley gas hub would be subject to an environmental assessment on ?strict scientific and environmental grounds?>

You can read his statement here:

MEDIA RELEASE

18 July 2012

Prime Minister?s and Environment Minister?s commitments to ?strict? gas hub assessment welcomed after WA EPA fiasco

The Wilderness Society has welcomed comments today by both PM Gillard and Environment Minister Burke re-committing the Commonwealth to a rigorous assessment of the impacts of, and alternatives to, the proposed gas hub at James Price Point.

In separate statements the two key Federal decision makers state that the assessment must meet the standards set out in the 2008 Browse LNG Strategic Assessment Agreement and the Commonwealth decision will be based on strict scientific and environmental grounds.

Wilderness Society spokesperson Peter Robertson said the recent fiasco in WA where the ?EPA?s recommendation? was merely the opinion of the sole surviving member of the Board must be corrected by the Commonwealth.

?The WA side of the assessment has descended into farce and the Commonwealth has no alternative other than to reject its findings and carry out the rigorous environmental (and social and cultural heritage) investigations the EPA was unable or unwilling to undertake.

?For many months environment groups, community volunteers and independent scientists have highlighted and exposed the glaring inadequacies of the scientific studies and other information presented to the EPA by the project proponents ? the WA Department of State Development (DSD) and Woodside.

?In light of the identified inadequacies, the EPA ought to have insisted on peer review of the proponent?s ?science? but, other than in the case of dinosaur footprints, chose not to do so. This is despite the proponent originally committing to comprehensive peer review.

?The assessment process has also contravened the original agreement by, for example, not properly considering gas processing options outside the Kimberley.

?Only yesterday the public learned via EPA Chair Dr Paul Vogel that the EPA originally preferred, on environmental grounds, another site south of Broome for the gas hub, but then dismissed this option on the basis of untested feedback from the government.

?We will now be working intensively with the Commonwealth to ensure that all the deficiencies in the WA side of the assessment are identified and corrected, and that options for processing Browse gas at ?brownfields? sites outside the Kimberley, as preferred by several project partners, are put back ?front and centre? where they belong.

PM Gillard: ?Our environmental assessments, whether its James Prime Point or anywhere else, are done on strict scientific and environmental grounds,? she said. ?It?s not about who?s on which ship or who?s holding up which placard; it is about the science and the environment and what is best for our environment, so that is what the Minister will take into account.?

Hon. Tony Burke:

?At that point, I will firstly verify that they have met the requirements of the strategic assessment and then I will consider the proposal under national environmental law,? he said. He said the site?s heritage values must be considered under the terms of reference for the joint Federal-State strategic assessment ? a process which was rigorous and would include the opportunity for public comment.

Harper returns from injury, helps Nats split with Braves

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:09 p.m. ET July 21, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - On the verge of a major stumble, Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals proved resilient.

After Friday's 11-inning demoralizing defeat, the Nationals promptly lost the opener of Saturday's doubleheader and the prized rookie to an injured ankle. Without the Harper in the starting lineup for the nightcap, Washington fell behind by two runs in the first inning.

But the 19-year-old returned to single and score as a pinch-hitter, Roger Bernadina had a tiebreaking hit in the seventh inning and Washington earned a split of the day-night doubleheader with a 5-2 victory over Atlanta on Saturday night.

The Braves won the first game 4-0 behind Ben Sheets' strong performance.

Instead of another loss and barely maintaining its division lead, John Lannan helped Washington snap a three-game losing streak and move ahead of Atlanta in the NL East by 2 1/2 games.

"I think most of the guys in this locker room felt like it was a must win tonight," said closer Tyler Clippard, who pitched the ninth inning for his 16th save. "If they took three from us right away, it would have been a pretty big blow. To get this win tonight, John stepped up in a huge way for us, pitched great and our offense came through when we needed, too. It was a huge win."

In between games, Nationals manager Davey Johnson said the MRI on Harper showed no break though he kept his centerfielder out of the starting lineup for Game 2.

Harper entered in the eighth and singled, stole second and scored on Danny Espinosa's single to right. The first-time All-Star stayed in as the right fielder in the ninth.

"It feels all right," Harper said. "Once I get going, that's when it feels good. When I sit down, that's when it feels bad."

Bernadina, who entered as a defensive replacement after Harper fouled a bunt off his left ankle in the first inning of the first game, finished 5 of 7 on the day including a go-ahead RBI single in the night game.

Lannan (1-0) pitched seven innings for the win.

Cristhian Martinez (4-2) allowed a run in 1 1-3 innings of relief behind starter Randall Delgado.

In the opener, Sheets (2-0) pitched six shutout innings, Brian McCann and Chipper Jones homered. Outdueling Nationals starter Edwin Jackson (5-6), Sheets extended his scoreless innings streak to 12 in his return after missing last season because of Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Harper gave signs that he would play in the second game when he stepped into the on-deck circle in the seventh.

After Sandy Leon's leadoff single and with the scored tied at two, Johnson instead turned to pinch-hitter Mark DeRosa, whose sacrifice bunt advanced Leon to second. One out later, Bernadina's grounder into right field scored Leon.

Harper's failed bunt attempt came in the bottom of the day's first inning. Limping and doubled over in pain for several moments, he completed the at-bat by striking out. Harper returned to center field in the second inning, but Bernadina replaced him on defense for the top of the third with the Nationals trailing 1-0.

"(Bryce) was down hitting, trying to swing with it, and Michael Morse and (Adam))LaRoche saw him and said he can't even swing. So, that's why I took him out," Johnson said.

The kid thought he could tough it out.

"I didn't think I broke something," Harper said. "Pain doesn't really get to me much. I think if he would have left me in there I could have played, definitely."

Riding the momentum of the earlier win - their third straight - the Braves jumped ahead 2-0 in the first. Jones stroked a two-out, RBI double into the right-center gap of Lannan and Freddie Freeman followed with an RBI hit.

Jones hit a two-run, pinch-hit home run in the first game.

Recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, Lannan settled down and held the Braves scoreless over the next six innings, not allowing a hit over his final four innings. Despite a 4.89 ERA in the minors, the Nationals' leader with 10 wins last season allowed only five hits, walked two, struck out three and hit two batters before the sellout crowd of 40,007.
