The planet is a bit larger and about twice as massive as Jupiter. It orbits its sun-like star once every 1.5 days. The team making the discovery estimates the planet's temperature at a searing 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit.

On one level, such "hot Jupiters" are a dime a dozen these days. Because they are massive and close to their host stars, they are the easiest planets to spot with virtually every planet-hunting technique astronomers have used to date.

What sets this discovery apart, however, is that the planet is the first to have been found through a process that in some ways could simplify planet hunting, researchers say. Its effectiveness is limited to big planets orbiting close to their stars, the team reporting the discovery acknowledges.

But it also holds out the hope of finding such planets when the parent stars may be too faint for other, currently used techniques. This opens the possibility of adding many more extra-solar planets to a catalog that now tops 800 of them.

No need to hunt for the wobble a planet's gravity imparts to its star's spectrum. No need to wait for a planet to pass in front of its star, known as a transit.

Instead, the team looked for a combination of three relatively small effects that wax and wane throughout a planet's orbit around a star. This delivers a different signal to a planet-hunting device like NASA's Kepler spacecraft than the eclipsing planet, or transit method, delivers, notes David Latham, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and a member of the team discovering the planet.

"The transits last just a short time, just a couple of hours," Dr. Latham writes in an e-mail. But the effects the team tracked "rise and fall continuously through the entire orbital period of the planet, roughly 36 hours, so it?s not hard to distinguish these phenomena."

And it can detect planets that don't transit their stars.

The approach was conceived 10 years ago by Harvard University astrophysicist Avi Loeb and Scott Gaudi, now an assistant professor of astronomy at The Ohio State University in Columbus, who took a cue from Albert Einstein.

One prediction of Einstein's theory of special relativity is that when an object is moving at a pace close to the speed of light, any light it emits appears more intense along the object's line of motion, forming a beam. To an observer watching the object approach, the light looks brighter than it would if the object were stationary.

The effect is most pronounced in powerful astronomical events such as gamma-ray bursts, in which matter emitting the gamma rays is accelerated to 99.9 percent of the speed of light, Dr. Loeb explains.

Indeed, to an astronomer looking directly into the beam, the effect can lead to the illusion that the light is traveling faster than its 186,000-mile a second speed limit. Such beams emanate from the poles of supermassive black holes that have gone on feeding binges. Researchers call them superluminal jets.

Turkey hunting in Texas dried up along with the state's water due to the epic drought of 2011. And while the drought has relented, turkey season hasn't been the same.

Turkey season closed Wednesday in the state, and wildlife officials expect this year will continue a trend the state has seen since 2010, with hunters killing the fewest birds in decades. Turkeys don't mate when stressed by drought, making them hard to find and triggering a ripple effect that plays out over the next few hunting seasons.

"The drought in 2011 had a significant impact on turkey production," said Steve Lightfoot, a spokesperson for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The result is that, if this season mimics last year's, hunters will bag 60 percent fewer long beards ? or mature males ? than they did before the drought hit.

The Texas turkey season is legendary. Hunters flock to Texas from around the world to nab the state's coveted long beards, males that are at least 2 years old and have brilliant, hair-like feathers on their chest. This year, wildlife managers and ranch owners said hunters found mostly immature jakes, yearling birds that are less desirable to hunters.

Turkey hunters pump $214 million into the Texas economy annually, the largest amount of any state, according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service analysis of turkey hunting from 2006, the latest available.

"Most of the state is still in drought and there are patches of exceptional drought from the Panhandle to Deep South Texas," said Texas state climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon. About 43 percent of the state is still in a "severe" drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Nearly 75 percent of Texas spent a good part of 2011 in "extreme" drought, with more than 25 percent in "exceptional" drought, the highest classification. Conditions improved in 2012, but since October the state has turned dry again, Nielson-Gammon said. Turkey harvests, declining for years, fell off dramatically when the drought struck.

In the 2009-2010 hunting season, spring turkey hunters killed an estimated 20,555 birds. In the 2010-2011 season, that number fell to 15,871 birds. In 2011-2012 season, the number fell to 12,033 ? the lowest in three decades ? according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's small game harvest survey. This year's numbers won't be available until late summer.

Droughts that last several months can reduce wild turkey flocks by 50 percent, according to the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. For birds such as turkeys that nest on the ground, a long drought can destroy mating and nesting spots in addition to robbing them of food. Eggs laid in hot, dry weather often don't survive. Chicks also become easy picking for predators, and the birds are more susceptible to disease and parasites during a drought.

When hens aren't eager to mate, the adult males that strut and sing to attract females ? called gobblers ? give up on mating and focus on finding food. When gobblers aren't strutting to impress hens, hunters' fake hen calls are futile.

Other birds, from fellow ground-nesters like the prairie chicken to songbirds to migratory species, are likely feeling the drought, too, said Iliana Pe?a, conservation director for Audubon Texas. But the effects are hard to quantify.

"We could have an excessive decline on any of those species on, say, fledging young and you wouldn't necessarily see it for a few years," she said. "Those impacts can occur and they will occur over the long term."

Birds are adapted short droughts, she added. And while it may be too soon to link any change to the drought now, birders throughout the state could start to notice a difference if the dry spell continues.

The much-anticipated incoming Comet ISON, which some scientists hope will become the "comet of the century" later this year, may not be visible to the naked eye yet, but you don't have to wait months to see this icy wanderer. The comet takes center stage in an online telescope webcast on Sunday.

Comet ISON was first discovered last year and is currently expected to swing extremely close by the sun in late November, when it will be at its best and brightest of the year. In anticipation of the comet's arrival, the online Slooh Space Camera will offer live telescope views of the object beginning at 4:45 p.m. ET.

The webcast marks Slooh's fourth monthly webcast dedicated to tracking Comet ISON's progress through the solar system. During Sunday's 30-minute live show, Slooh officials will provide views of Comet ISON from the firm's remotely operated telescopes in the Canary Islands, off the west coast of Africa.

Senior space scientist Padma Yanamandra-Fisher of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo., will join Slooh producer Paul Cox in the comet webcast. Yanamandra-Fisher is helping coordinate NASA's Comet ISON Observing Campaign to track the comet. The international campaign is bringing together scientists around the world to plan out observations of ISON.

NASA has already used several spacecraft, including sun-watching Stereo probes and the Hubble Space Telescope, to observe ISON. An unmanned balloon mission is also among the expeditions planned to observe ISON.

Comet ISON has drawn worldwide attention from stargazers and scientists, including NASA, because of its close approach to the sun on Nov. 28, when it will be just 730,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) from the sun. During that close encounter with the sun,?Comet ISON could become one of the brightest comets?in decades. However, the comet could also fizzle out.

Comet ISON was discovered last September by Russian amateur astronomers Artyom Novichonok and Vitali Nevski using the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON) of remotely operated telescopes. The comet is officially known by the identification C/2012 S1 (ISON).

On April 10, scientists used the Hubble Space Telescope to observe Comet ISON. At the time it was about 386 million miles (621 million kilometers) from the sun and 394 million miles (634 million kilometers) from Earth.

When observed by Hubble, the comet's nucleus was about 3 miles (5 kilometers) across with a dusty tail that stretched more than 57,000 miles (92,000 kilometers) long.

"When you talk to folks who live in the invaded areas, they tell you they want their fire ants back," said Edward LeBrun, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, in a statement from the school. "Fire ants are in many ways very polite. They live in your yard. They form mounds and stay there, and they only interact with you if you step on their mound."

A study published in the April issue of the journal Biological Invasions found that in areas infested with crazy ants, few to no fire ants were present. Exactly how they are able to outcompete fire ants is so far unknown. In areas with crazy ants, the researchers also found greatly diminished numbers of native ant species, according to the study.

Fire ants are known for their painful stings and have spread through the Southeast since arriving from South America in the 1930s. Crazy ants were first discovered in Houston in 2002, and they have already spread to coastal areas from Texas to Florida, according to the researchers. Although the "crazies" don't have as painful a sting as fire ants, they multiply in even greater numbers. They are also difficult to control since they don't eat the same poison baits as fire ants do, the statement noted.

Last year, the crazy ant species was identified as Nylanderia fulva, which hails from northern Argentina and southern Brazil, according to a 2012 study in PLOS ONE. It's also known as the tawny crazy ant and was previously named the Rasberry crazy ant after the exterminator Tom Rasberry, who first discovered it. The "crazy" moniker comes from the ant's quick, seemingly random movements.

Luckily, the crazy ant doesn't spread as quickly as the fire ant, advancing only 650 feet (200 meters) per year on its own, the release noted. Therefore, it's vital that people don't accidentally transport the ant, the prime method by which it has spread, according to the release.

How Cheap Genetic Testing Complicates Cancer Screening For Us ...

Sometimes, more medical information is a bad thing. The influential United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends against most women getting genetic screenings for their susceptibility to breast cancer. Why? Because the tests are imperfect: for every woman who gets tested for genes associated with onset breast cancer, even more will falsely test positive, leading spooked patients into needless surgery or psychological trauma. Super cheap genetic testing from enterprising health startups, such as 23andMe, have complicated cancer detection for us all by increasing the accessibility of imperfect medical information.

After discovering a mutated BRCA1 gene, known to increase the?likelihood?of breast cancer 60 to 80 percent, actress Angelina Jolie underwent a radical preventive double mastectomy. Her brave confession in the New York Times brought much needed attention to breast cancer awareness, but it?s dangerous in the hands of a statistically illiterate population.

For instance, as New York Times statistical guru, Nate Silver, once reminded me, while breast cancer mammograms are 75 percent accurate, a woman who tests positive only has about a 10 percent chance of actually getting cancer. Since the vast majority of women don?t have cancer, there are far more women who will falsely test positive (here is a helpful blog post with the numbers worked out). Most importantly, surveys reveal that many people don?t understand the math behind false positives in cancer testing, and may make uninformed decisions as a result.

The same math holds true for the mutated BRCA1/2 gene of Jolie?s confession: researchers estimate that a tiny 0.11 to 0.12 of women have the faulty gene. ?I believe in doing genetic testing for BRCA1/2 with appropriate counseling,? writes University of Southern California?s David Agus, one of Steve Jobs? cancer doctors. The answers are not simple in this case and require experienced professionals to discuss with the patient.?

Traditionally hundreds of thousands of dollars to test, a cottage industry of cheap genetic testing has sprung up. 23andMe, one of the most popular, offers the service for as little at $99, and has even dared to weigh in on the BRCA controversy on the company blog.

Citing a new study that found no negative emotional consequences from patients after learning about their BRCA1 mutation, 23andMe concludes, ?The findings are important given that a frequent criticism of direct-to-consumer testing is based on the assumption that it causes either serious emotional distress or triggers deleterious actions on the part of consumers.?

Given the absence of evidence for serious emotional distress or inappropriate actions in this subset of mutation-positive customers who agreed to be interviewed for this study, ?broader screening of Ashkenazi Jewish women for these three BRCA mutations should be considered.?

Sometimes, however, voluntary surveys don?t tell the whole story. In its cover story on Jolie?s decision, TIME magazine recounts the tale of one woman who likely had unnecessary preventative surgery after learning about a genetic defect. ?She freaked out and had a bilateral mastectomy,? said Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, who worried that this patient?s particular mutation was not as troubling as she worried it was.

Interestingly, TIME?s author, Kate Pickart, argues the financial costs of genetic testing has stall mass run on genetic tests. Even a new provision under the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) only mandates 100 percent insurance coverage for patients with a family history of genetic flaws.

But, at just $99 (and probably far less in the future), financial barriers are crumbling. This isn?t to say that genetic screening is bad, it just complicates things for the rest of us, especially those who don?t understand statistics. The more women get tested, the more false positives exist, the less confident patients and physicians become in a course of action.

Maybe our only hope out of this cheaper testing spiral is technology that makes detection more accurate and more predictive. One promising solution is a new bra that constantly monitors deep tissue for cancerous signs (below).

So, perhaps, before long, we will innovate our way out of this dilemma.

Enter Jason Sherwood (Michael Angarano of Almost Famous and Haywire), some years earlier a brilliant student of Sinclair's who has returned home to small-town Pennsylvania after supposedly failing as a playwright in New York City. Sinclair reads Sherwood's play, a dark family drama called The Chrysalis, and falls in love with it. (Start counting the minutes until the transference occurs.) She shares the manuscript with her colleague, drama teacher Carl Kapinas (more than once a joke is made about the pronunciation of his last name), played by the overly fey Nathan Lane.

Sinclair and Kapinas then join forces to convince their principal and vice principal (the very physically humorous Jessica Hecht of Sideways, and Norbert Leo Butz, who appeared recently in Disconnect) to allow them to make The Chrysalis into the next student theatrical production. Unbeknownst to Sherwood, who already is reluctant about the proposition, Sinclair and Kapinas agree to alter the play's violent ending on the ultimatum of their superiors.

My biggest problem (and there were several) with the film is that what we see of the play ? the supposed work of a genius student ? is utterly preposterous. A complete bomb! Couldn't the filmmaker come up with something better than nonsensical melodrama?

Meanwhile, I sort of enjoyed the main subplot, during which Sinclair enters into a sparring feud with Sherwood's dad, a physician played by the affable Greg Kinnear. Sinclair's got it in her mind that Dr. Sherwood is the model for the abusive father character in his son's play, and that now he's quashing Jason's creativity and forcing him to go to law school. As we all know, appearances are deceiving, and Moore and Kinnear actually create a sizzling on-screen chemistry.

Sippican Historical Society is delighted to join forces with author Josh Chalmers to remind children that they, too, are history makers who have the power to change the world ? and it?s easier than they think! On May 18 at 11:00 am, SHS will host a reading of the popular new children?s book, Change the World Before Bedtime, a gold medal recipient of the Mom?s Choice Award honoring excellence in family-friendly media, products and services. Co-authored by Mark Kimball Moulton and Karen Good, the book uses simple, engaging rhyme and colorful illustrations (created from recycled materials) to reinforce its influential message: that children can create powerful changes through simple actions.

Designed for children Pre-K through Grade 2, Change the World Before Bedtime explores how the little things in life ? a smile, a kind word, a simple deed ? can help change the world in a big way, showing readers that even an ordinary kid can be a superhero before bedtime! In addition to reading the book with the children and having a conversation about the many ways young people can make the world a better place, Chalmers will bring a hands-on art activity. Kids can make ?How I?d Change the World? banners, posters, flags and signs using construction paper, craft elements, recycled materials, and lots of imagination.

This event will take place at the Marion Music Hall at 164 Front Street (ample parking is available across the street at Island Wharf) and is free to the public. No reservations are required.

Later in May, the public is cordially invited to attend a special lecture presentation, ?Frances Perkins: First Female Cabinet Secretary,? co-sponsored by the Sippican Historical Society and Elizabeth Taber Library. To be held on May 24 at the Marion Music Hall at 7:00 pm, the presentation will feature a lecture by David Prentiss, Adjunct Professor of Political Science for UMass-Dartmouth and President/CEO of the New Bedford Symphony. Mr. Prentiss received a B.A. in Philosophy at Assumption College, a J.D. from New England School of Law and the Thomas P. O?Neill Fellowship for graduate studies in political science at Boston College. A popular speaker, he has given talks on Abraham Lincoln and other presidential leadership topics at the New Bedford Civil War Roundtable, the Lincoln Study Group of Boston, the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, and the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. Prentiss is currently writing a book on presidential leadership and the nature of democratic politics.

'We saved the ship': WWII vets from stricken aircraft carrier gather, likely for last time

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Two dozen surviving veterans from the World War II aircraft carrier USS Franklin gathered on Friday, probably for the last time, to honor and remember one of the most remarkable naval episodes of the war.

It was before dawn on a late winter morning in 1945 when a Japanese dive bomber dropped two 500 pound bombs on the Franklin. The year-old carrier nicknamed ?Big Ben? was serving in the Pacific theater and, at that moment, had maneuvered closer to Japan than any other U.S.-flagged carrier during the war.

Sam ?Dusty? Rhodes was asleep in the ship?s bunk area when the bombs hit. Rhodes was a water tender 3^rd class and was responsible for operating the ship?s massive boilers ? and with debris from the massive explosions raining down on him, that is just what he did.

Rhodes said he and other crew members ran to the one of the unaffected firerooms and attempted to raise enough steam to light the remaining boiler. When the flame caught from Rhodes? Zippo lighter, ?that?s when the ship?s heart started to beat again,? he recalled.

Above on the flight deck, the scene was nothing short of catastrophic. The Franklin was dead in the water, listing to one side and cut off from communications as fires burned everywhere. More than 800 sailors died in the attack, with hundreds more wounded.

But the Franklin didn?t sink, and that is the legacy crew members like Rhodes like to remember. The Franklin would become the most heavily damaged aircraft carrier of the war to make it back to port.

?We saved the ship,? Rhodes said. ?In the Navy, you save the ship. It?s your home.?

William Schauer was a Naval electrician and fireman 1^st class, just out of high school when he reported for duty on the deck of the Franklin, three months before the attack. Looking back on that day 68 years later, he said he was certain he was going to go down with the ship that morning, and ?that was the end.?

?But we were there for a purpose,? and despite suffering such heavy losses, Schauer says he still considers their mission ? keeping the ship afloat ? accomplished.

At the reunion on Friday, Medal of Honor recipient and retired Gen. James Livingston saluted the assembled veterans. He said their ?refusal to allow her to sink? allowed the Franklin to limp back to port instead of ending up buried forever on the ocean floor. ?That?s a testimony to what you are as men,? he said.

In the belly of the USS Yorktown, another decommissioned carrier that saw battle in the Pacific and now survives as the centerpiece of the Patriots Point Naval Museum in this bucolic Charleston suburb, a tattered and smoke-tinged flag is mounted overhead. It was the original battle flag that flew on the mast of the Franklin?s flight deck the day of the attack -- the same flag that Rhodes remembers looking up and noticing through the haze of black smoke after the bombs hit. Seeing it meant they still had a chance, he remembered, ?because we would strike the colors before abandoning ship.? ??

?Big Ben? made it all the way back to New York for repairs, where it sat on V-J Day when the war finally ended. It never saw action again, and was sold for scrap in the 1960s. The flag, along with the bell and a gun turret also on display at the Yorktown, are all that remain of one of the most momentous spectacles of heroism and fortitude of World War II. And with what could be the final gathering of the men who saved the ship, it is up to a new generation to remember the Franklin.

US Airways plane makes unusual belly landing at Newark airport

NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - A US Airways flight made an emergency landing on its belly at Newark Liberty International Airport early on Saturday after the plane's landing gear failed to deploy, but no one was injured, airline and government officials said.

Piedmont Airlines flight 4560, operating for US Airways from Philadelphia with 34 passengers and three crew members, landed safely at 1 a.m., and passengers were evacuated on the tarmac and transported to the terminal, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said in an email.

Belly landings are unusual and dangerous because of the threat of fire from the plane fuselage skidding on a hard surface, according to aviation experts.

The airport was closed for more than an hour, and the runway was closed for more than eight hours following the incident, officials said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a Twitter post that it was investigating. A US Airways spokesman said the plane is a Dash 8-100 with a capacity of 37 passengers. The plane was made by De Havilland of Canada, which is owned by Bombardier Inc.

The plane left Philadelphia late on Friday night and the pilot made an emergency declaration after the left main landing gear failed to deploy, according to airline and FAA officials. The pilot circled the airport and then decided to land with no gear deployed.

The incident comes nearly three weeks after a Scandinavian Airlines plane with 252 people on board clipped the wing of an ExpressJet, operated by Skywest Inc., with 31 passengers as they were preparing to take off from the same airport. There were no injuries.

High-testosterone competitors more likely to choose red

Why do so many sports players and athletes choose to wear the color red when they compete? A new study to be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, suggests that it may have to do with their testosterone levels.

The new study, conducted by psychological scientist Daniel Farrelly of the University of Sunderland and colleagues, demonstrated that males who chose red as their color in a competitive task had higher testosterone levels than other males who chose blue.

"The research shows that there is something special about the color red in competition, and that it is associated with our underlying biological systems," says Farrelly.

The researchers believe that the link may explain why many sports stars wear red clothing ? Tiger Woods, for example, famously chooses to wear a red shirt on the last day of a major competition.

Choosing to wear red "may, unconsciously, signal something about their competitive nature, and it may well be something that affects how their opponents respond," Farrelly explains.

Farrelly and colleagues recruited 73 men to participate in the study, and they were unaware of the study's aims. The men were told that they would be performing a competitive task and that their performances would be placed on a leaderboard. The participants then chose either a red or blue symbol to represent them in the table and completed the competitive tasks. They also answered questionnaires aimed at gauging whether various personal reasons may have affected their color choice.

To determine participants' testosterone levels, the researchers took saliva samples at the start of the study, before the participants knew about the competitive task, and again at the end.

The data revealed that men who chose red had higher baseline testosterone levels, and they rated their color as having higher levels of characteristics such as dominance and aggression, than men who chose blue.

Color choice did not, however, seem to be related to actual performance in the competitive task. The researchers believe that direct competition, in which opponents can be seen wearing red or appearing red, may be necessary for the red advantage to occur. Along these lines, previous research has shown that wearing red can be advantageous through its influence on opponents' perceptions, leading them to view red competitors as being "high quality" competitors.

Personal cybersecurity a challenge even for top... | Stuff.co.nz

Nobody is safe in the digital world and even the smartest minds in the cybersecurity world constantly struggle to fend off hackers in their personal lives.

Be discerning, be suspicious, and be very paranoid, advised top government and private-sector computer security experts at the Reuters Cybersecurity Summit this week.

"There are two types of people: those who've been hacked and those who don't know they've been hacked," said former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, sharing an adage commonly repeated in cybersecurity circles.

In their professional lives, cybersecurity experts use the latest technological innovations to defend computer networks from attack. But when it comes to personal protection, many employ surprisingly low-tech tactics.

Chertoff, who formed The Chertoff Group security consultancy after leaving government in 2009, says he did not use email while in office to cut off one channel of access to his networks. Current Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano does not use email either.

Eugene Kaspersky, whose company makes one of the top-selling anti-virus programs, uses a six-year-old Sony Ericsson cellphone as it is more difficult to hack into than the latest Internet-enabled smartphones.

"I'm a conservative man," said Kaspersky, whose Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab has conducted some of the most in-depth research on the Stuxnet virus and other malicious software. "I am paranoid ... I suspect every link and every email."

Other cybersecurity wonks caution people to keep critical data off hard drives, avoid putting sensitive information in writing and post little personal data on social media.

But not everyone listens, sometimes not even family members.

"My sister is a Petri dish for malware... When I go home to New Jersey, I have to play tech support," said George Kurtz, chief executive of security firm CrowdStrike.

He added, "Yeah, I'm pretty paranoid at home and even firewall off my kids."

FBI Executive Assistant Director Richard McFeely said his daughter, who recently returned home after graduating from college, asked him to look at a link she was sent that urged her to download something in order to watch a YouTube video.

"I made a call and sure enough, it's phishing," McFeely said, referring to a common online scam in which users are sent plausible-looking links, which when clicked will infect computers with malicious software. "My daughter easily would have done that if I was not sitting there."

McFeely said his daughter's Facebook postings have in the past led to the hacker group Anonymous publicizing her college house address to get at him and his family.

PHISHING TEST

Phishing is one of the most common tools used by hackers. It was through a phishing campaign that hackers managed to break into the Twitter account of the Associated Press and send a fake message last month about explosions at the White House, briefly driving down financial markets.

To avoid such attacks, the North American Electric Reliability Corp, which oversees the security of the electric grid, tests its 200 employees with a fake phishing email every quarter, according to CEO Gerry Cauley.

Anyone who clicks on the link has to undergo an hour of training with the IT department and the CEO himself.

"I explain to them how really important it is. It's the predominant path into any network security," Cauley said. He added that 20 employees had clicked on the fake link when he first ran the test, and only eight did in the latest test.

Several experts highlighted the importance of being careful about putting personal information online, though there was also a recognition that social media is here to stay.

"If you're living in the modern world ... if you're not in the social media, you don't exist," said Kaspersky. "But please, keep your mind switched on, don't post personal stuff."

Then again, social media can aid cyber investigators as well as crooks. CrowdStrike said it has managed to build profiles of many hackers, including their photographs, thanks to social media.

"We often bemoan, outside of cybersecurity, that we don't have privacy anymore, that Google and Facebook know so much about us," said CrowdStrike Chief Technology Officer Dmitri Alperovitch.

"That's true for the adversaries, too, right? They're all on social networks, they're all on Twitter, accumulating a digital trail that often goes back years."?

Majority of number combos picked for Powerball pot

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? It's all about the odds.

With the majority of possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone is almost sure to win the game's highest jackpot on Saturday night, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars ? and that's after taxes.

The problem, of course, is those same odds just about guarantee the lucky person won't be you. The chances of winning the $600 million prize remain astronomically high: 1 in 175.2 million. And lottery officials said Saturday that 80 percent of the possible combinations have been purchased.

"This would be the roll to get in on," said Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich. "Of course there's no guarantee, and that's the randomness of it, and the fun of it."

That hasn't deterred people across the Powerball-playing states from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday for their chance at striking it filthy rich.

At Jimmy's Mart, a small convenience store in suburban Columbia, S.C., Armous Peterson was reluctant to share his system for playing the Powerball. The 56-year-old was well aware of the long odds, but he also knows the mantra of just about every person buying tickets.

"Somebody is going to win," he said. "Lots of people are going to lose, too. But if you buy a ticket, that winner might be you."

The latest jackpot is the world's second largest overall, just behind a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012. The $600 million jackpot includes a $376.9 million cash option.

Charles Hill of Dallas says he buys lottery tickets every day. And he knows exactly what he'd do if he wins.

"What would I do with my money? I'd run and hide," he said. "I wouldn't want none of my kinfolks to find me."

Patrons at a convenience store in Lubbock, Texas, carried out more tacos and burritos than Powerball tickets.

Raul Nava, an oilfield worker, rarely plays, even when the jackpot climbs above $300 million. But he said the jackpot turned his head this week. He knows the odds, but he couldn't resist having a shot at holding the winning ticket.

"What if I'm that one?" he said with a big grin. "That's what I'm hoping for."

Benjamin Richardson, 56, also in suburban Columbia, S.C., plays every Powerball drawing, figuring spending a few bucks a week is no great loss ? and it keeps him in the running for the big jackpot.

"If it happens, it happens. It's all luck anyway," he said. "What do they all say? If it is your time, it's your time."

BBM or Google+ Hangouts; are you excited by either? [Poll]

The big talk of the week has definitely been cross-platform messaging. First up at BlackBerry Live, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins dropped the huge news that their signature messaging platform, BBM, would be going cross-platform this summer and coming to iOS as well as Android. Then, literally 24 hours later Google stepped up and introduced their cross-platform offering, Google+ Hangouts, released the same day on iOS. What we want to know is; are you excited by either of these products?

For many, BBM needs little introduction. Before the iPhone, many of you, like me, used a BlackBerry and BBM with it. Some like it for its security, others for the little 'D' and 'R' notifications that let you know for sure what happened with your message. There's a lot to like about BBM, and as it has evolved with the latest version on BlackBerry 10 it now incorporates voice chat, as well as screen sharing and an excellent, and free, video calling experience. While iOS will not see these video calling features at launch, BlackBerry has said they will be bringing it in future updates.

Google+ Hangouts seems to be an amalgamation of the existing Hangouts experience, merged together with Google Talk. Indeed, on Android, Hangouts has now replaced the stock Google Talk application, and on iOS we're treated to very much the same experience as our Android counterparts. Unlike BBM, Hangouts is already with us, and incorporates free, group video calling at launch.

Both are arriving on iOS after the likes of other third-party clients such as Kik or WhatsApp, not to mention that iOS has its own messaging service, iMessage. OK, so iMessage is somewhat more limited than the others in that it requires an iOS device or a Mac to operate, but iMessage is seamlessly integrated into the stock messaging app. So, when sending a message on your iPhone to one of your contacts, you don't have to worry if they have access to iMessage or not; they just get an SMS message if they don't.

"We have just not played good cricket, the table shows that. We have been pretty inconsistent. This is what will happen in a tournament when all the teams are balanced," the KKR skipper went on to add.

PSG president wants to keep working with Beckham

PARIS (AP) ? Paris Saint-Germain hopes to strike a deal with David Beckham in the next two weeks in which the former England captain will work with the French club after retirement, possibly in an ambassadorial role.

The 38-year-old midfielder announced Thursday he will retire from soccer after PSG's last game of the season.

"I met him yesterday, actually, and he's very interested to continue being involved with the big project of Paris Saint-Germain," Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the team president, said at a news conference Friday. "He believes in the project, he believes in the club, he loves the club.

"He enjoyed the last six months, so we are in discussions now. Just yesterday he announced he was going to retire so we have time to discuss," Al-Khelaifi added. "In the next two weeks we are hopefully going to announce if we're going to reach an agreement together. I hope we will because honestly I want him. "

Coach Carlo Ancelotti said Friday that Beckham will start PSG's final home game against Brest on Saturday. PSG's last game is at Lorient on May 26, although it is uncertain whether Beckham will play in that one.

"He's taken this decision. We have to respect his decision," Ancelotti said, speaking about Beckham's decision to retire. "He thought it was the right decision to stop. Not just PSG but the football world lost a fantastic player a professional player, a good man."

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star joined PSG in a surprise move on the last day of the transfer window. He has played 13 games ? most as a substitute ? and been part of a league title with a fourth club. He also won two championships with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"Football will lose a player who had a very good image. So in that sense we can't be happy," Ancelotti said. "I will remember him as a fantastic passer. He was one of the best in the world at passing. His career was fantastic. He played for the best clubs in the world ? Real Madrid, Manchester United, Milan, Paris Saint-Germain. He went to America and won the championship. He was a fantastic midfielder who could play in any position."

Although Beckham has played reasonably well at times for PSG, he has actually stood out more for his combative streak than for his passing and crossing.

Beckham has set up only one goal, a chipped pass from the right against Rennes that appeared to be going in anyway before top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic helped himself to another goal.

Beckham was booked in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Barcelona, and against Evian on April 28 he was red carded shortly after coming on as he went into a tackle with a dangerously raised foot. There was no contact, but the challenge was reckless.

Against Brest at Parc des Princes on Saturday, Beckham will have a chance to say farewell to PSG's fans, who knew him only for a short time. Then comes the finale in Lorient.

"The quality he showed is his professionalism on the pitch and off the pitch, the character," Ancelotti said.

Ancelotti's future with the club is uncertain. He has yet to confirm whether he will be staying next season, and he has no idea if Beckham will be with the club in some capacity.

"It's not my business to find a role for David," he said. "He's going to speak to the club if he decides to have a new position."

Gene involved in neurodegeneration keeps clock running: Scientists identify another gene important to morning wake-up call

May 16, 2013 ? Northwestern University scientists have shown a gene involved in neurodegenerative disease also plays a critical role in the proper function of the circadian clock.

In a study of the common fruit fly, the researchers found the gene, called Ataxin-2, keeps the clock responsible for sleeping and waking on a 24-hour rhythm. Without the gene, the rhythm of the fruit fly's sleep-wake cycle is disturbed, making waking up on a regular schedule difficult for the fly.

The discovery is particularly interesting because mutations in the human Ataxin-2 gene are known to cause a rare disorder called spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) and also contribute to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. People with SCA suffer from sleep abnormalities before other symptoms of the disease appear.

This study linking the Ataxin-2 gene with abnormalities in the sleep-wake cycle could help pinpoint what is causing these neurodegenerative diseases as well as provide a deeper understanding of the human sleep-wake cycle.

The findings will be published May 17 in the journal Science. Ravi Allada, M.D., professor of neurobiology in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, and Chunghun Lim, a postdoctoral fellow in his lab, are authors of the paper.

Period (per) is a well-studied gene in fruit flies that encodes a protein, called PER, which regulates circadian rhythm. Allada and Lim discovered that Ataxin-2 helps activate translation of PER RNA into PER protein, a key step in making the circadian clock run properly.

"It's possible that Ataxin-2's function as an activator of protein translation may be central to understanding how, when you mutate the gene and disrupt its function, it may be causing or contributing to diseases such as ALS or spinocerebellar ataxia," Allada said.

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is a model organism for scientists studying the sleep-wake cycle because the fly's genes are highly conserved with the genes of humans.

"I like to say that flies sleep similarly to humans, except flies don't use pillows," said Allada, who also is associate director for Northwestern's Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology. The biological timing mechanism for all animals comes from a common ancestor hundreds of millions of years ago.

Ataxin-2 is the second gene in a little more than two years that Northwestern researchers have identified as a core gear of the circadian clock, and the two genes play similar roles.

Allada, Lim and colleagues in 2011 reported their discovery of a gene, which they dubbed "twenty-four," that plays a role in translating the PER protein, keeping the sleep-wake cycle on a 24-hour rhythm.

Allada and Lim wanted to better understand how twenty-four works, so they looked at proteins that associate with twenty-four. They found the twenty-four protein sticking to ATAXIN-2 and decided to investigate further. In their experiments, reported in Science, Allada and Lim discovered the Ataxin-2 and twenty-four genes appear to be partners in PER protein translation.

"We've really started to define a pathway that regulates the circadian clock and seems to be especially important in a specific group of neurons that governs the fly's morning wake-up," Allada said. "We saw that the molecular and behavioral consequences of losing Ataxin-2 are nearly the same as losing twenty-four."

As is the case in a mutation of the twenty-four gene, when the Ataxin-2 gene is not present, very little PER protein is found in the circadian pacemaker neurons of the brain, and the fly's sleep-wake rhythm is disturbed.

Warning didn't change for-profit dialysis drug use

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Despite a strong warning from U.S. regulators in 2007, for-profit dialysis centers still gave their kidney failure patients more of a certain anemia drug than non-profit centers in 2008, says a new study.

The researchers write in JAMA Internal Medicine that their finding suggests for-profit dialysis centers may have been motivated to give more of the drug for financial gain in spite of the warning.

For example, the more of the drug the centers used, the more they'd get paid.

"Our study can't say for sure that higher uses of these agents were caused by financial profitability for these providers, but it suggests it's a possibility," said Dr. Julie Ishida, the study's lead author from the University of California, San Francisco.

Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents - or ESAs - are given to most people with chronic kidney failure to treat anemia by producing red blood cells. Anemia can cause people to look pale, feel tired or sluggish and short of breath.

The authors don't say which specific drugs they looked at, but the class of drugs includes Amgen's Epogen and Janssen's Procrit.

In 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a black box warning - the strongest kind - to use as little of the ESAs as possible. Research showed higher doses were associated with an increased risk of death, strokes and heart disease.

"It's a great drug. It's just that it does have side effects and people do need to be aware of them," said Dr. Nina Tolkoff-Rubin, director of renal transplantation and hemodialysis at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Previous studies had found that for-profit dialysis centers gave more ESAs than non-profit centers, and Ishida and her colleagues wanted to see if that changed after the FDA issued its warning.

For the new study, the researchers used a database of 275,291 people who were receiving dialysis before the warning was issued in February 2007 and after it was in place in February 2008. All patients were on Medicare, the U.S. insurance program for the elderly and disabled.

Overall, both for- and non-profit dialysis centers reduced their use of ESAs between 2007 and 2008, but for-profit centers still gave their patients significantly more of the drugs than their non-profit counterparts.

In 2007, for-profit dialysis centers - on average - gave their patients about 9,000 units per weekly dose, compared to about 8,300 units per weekly dose in 2008.

Non-profit dialysis centers gave their patient an average of 5,600 units per weekly dose in 2007, compared to about 5,000 units per weekly dose in 2008.

"Even in people who switched from non-profit to for-profit facilities, we saw their levels went up. Conversely, when they switch from a for-profit to non-profit, their level of the drug went down," Ishida said.

She noted that they could not compare the outcomes of patients at the various types of centers.

NEW PAYMENT SYSTEM

Tolkoff-Rubin, who was not involved with the new study, said the findings made sense, but she doesn't think the researchers would find the same results if they did their study today.

That's because the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services implemented a so-called bundle payment system for dialysis services in 2011. That means dialysis centers receive one payment for all dialysis care - no matter how much ESA is used.

"I'm sure if you looked at it now, it wouldn't look this way. What you're seeing is a snapshot from when there was an incentive to give more," she said.

Ishida said she plans to do a similar study looking at what happened after the bundled payments were put in place.

"In this era of changing reimbursement for end-stage renal disease, I think it will be important for patients and doctors to be aware of the possible influences on treatment decisions," she said.

1. How old are you, where do you live, and how long have you been a Maximum PC reader?

I am 22, and I live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. I've been reading and following Maximum PC for quite a few years. It started with me buying an issue every time I was on a ferry, and grew from there.

Not in the slightest. I enter tons of contests and the pattern is I forget about it after a few days and never hear anything again.

4. What did you think when you first received contact from us?

I was trying to remember what I entered.? I finally Googled it expecting it to be a mousepad or something, and couldn't believe my eyes when I found the contest page again and saw it was for a $3,000 gaming system. Then my brain ran through the number of ways this could be a hoax, a joke, or a scam.? Finally the truth set in and I got a wee bit excited.

5. What was the unboxing like, and what is the system like now that it?s up and running?

I knew it was supposed to come late on the Monday, so I sat in the front room of my house and frantically looked out the window every time I heard a vehicle.? When it finally arrived I immediately took it out of the box and just stared at it in awe for a while.? Finally I took the picture (above) and started setting it up.
So far it runs like a top. It's nice being able to crank up every setting in games without having to even worry about performance.? On top of that it?s significantly smaller (and prettier) than my old PC, which will be awesome for LAN's.? All in all, I can?t thank Maximum PC enough. This was truly unreal.
