Fuel for Exercise ? Part II: During Exercise | The Daily PT

In the last post, I reviewed the guidelines for eating and drinking before a workout.? Just as it is critical to fuel yourself properly before exercise, it is equally important to keep yourself fueled during exercise and afterwards for recovery.? Here I will discuss fuel during exercise, but stay tuned for more information on eating well for recovery.

Exercise lasting one hour or less

Typically, if you?re exercising in a moderate temperature environment for less than an hour, additional food and beverage is not necessary to fuel the activity.? In fact, consuming calories that aren?t needed by the body will likely result in excess calories and potential weight gain.? Many times, we are exercising to burn calories ? so taking in calories during exercise would defeat the purpose!? For this type of exercise, water is preferable for hydration.? Unless you are an excessive sweater, water will do a great job of replacing your fluid losses.? If you are one who sweats excessively and/?or you are exercising in a very hot and humid environment, you may want to choose a low calorie sports drinks with electrolytes, like Gatorade?s G2, Propel Zero, or Powerade Zero.? Another more natural (and trendy) option for hydration with electrolytes is coconut water (not coconut milk), like Zico and Vita Coco.? Whatever you are sipping on, make sure to take frequent sips during your workout to maintain any water and weight you lose during exercise.? Aim to drink enough to prevent weight loss from sweating and avoid weight gain from excessive intake (test yourself by weighing right before and exercise and see if you have lost, gained, or maintained your weight during the exercise session).

Exercise lasting more than one hour (moderate to high intensity)

An electrolyte-??containing beverage may be more appropriate during a longer exercise session, especially if you plan to sweat a lot and/?or are in a hot and humid climate.? However, you still may be able to get enough sodium and potassium through your pre? and post-??workout meals and snacks.? Make sure to take frequent sips of fluids during your exercise session to maintain your weight and fluid status.?

If you plan to exercise for a long duration (more than 60?90 minutes), you should plan to keep a quick and easy source of carbohydrate on hand to replenish the sugars that you burn during exercise.? To enhance your performance during long, intense exercise sessions, start taking in some carbohydrates after the first hour and aim to consume about 25?60 grams of carbohydrate per hour.? The carbohydrate can come from sports drinks (like regular Gatorade, Propel, and Powerade), bars, sports gels, pretzels, fruits, juices, or other carbohydrate-??rich foods.? Each person will tolerate such foods and beverages differently during exercise, so make sure to experiment with what works best for you.?

Obama, Bush chummy as George W.'s White House portrait is unveiled

WASHINGTON - The Bushes were back in the White House on Thursday, cracking wise with U.S. President Barack Obama as a portrait of the 43rd president was unveiled in a friendly ceremony void of politics but rife with laughs.

Apparently not nursing any hard feelings that Obama has been maligning his record for the past four years, a cheerful George W. Bush made a rare public appearance to praise his hosts, his wife, Laura, and his new portrait.

"Thank you so much for inviting our rowdy friends to my hanging," Bush told the president and first lady Michelle Obama in the ornate East Room after a private lunch that included 14 members of his family, including his parents and children.

To an eruption of raucous laughter, he added: "I am also pleased, Mr. President, that when you are wandering these halls as you wrestle with tough decisions, you will now be able to gaze at this portrait and ask: 'What would George do?'"

The event was heavily attended by members of Bush's White House team, including strategist Karl Rove, onetime homeland security chief Tom Ridge and former secretary of state Colin Powell.

They were among those laughing hardest when Bush was particularly self-deprecating.

Obama too got some big laughs.

"George, I will always remember the gathering you hosted for all the living former presidents before I took office, your kind words of encouragement ... plus, you also left me a really good TV sports package," he said. "I use it."

Even the famously genteel Laura Bush ? described by her husband as "the greatest first lady ever" before apologizing to his mother, also a former first lady ? got into the act.

Her portrait was also unveiled on Thursday. Like her husband's, it was painted by artist John Howard Sanden.

"It was really gracious of you to invite us back to the White House to hang a few family pictures," Laura Bush told the Obamas. "And I'm sure you know nothing makes a house a home like having portraits of its former occupants staring down at you from the walls."

But she also sounded a serious, sentimental tone that left her twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, fighting back tears.

"I hope others will see in this portrait what I see: a woman who was honoured and humbled to live in the White House during a period of great challenge, and who will never forget the countless American faces who make up the true portrait of that time," she said.

By and large, remarks by Laura Bush and Michelle Obama reflected the well-documented affection between the two women.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Laura for providing such a wonderful model of strength and grace for me to follow as first lady," Michelle Obama said.

"It's just been amazing to learn from your example not just as a first lady, but as a mother of two wonderful daughters .... You've done a terrific job."

Obama too praised Bush for serving the country, adding that only a former president truly understands the difficulties of the job.

"In this job, no decision that reaches your desk is easy, no choice you make is without cost, no matter how hard you try, you're not going to make everybody happy," Obama said. "I think that's something that President Bush and I both learned pretty quickly."

It was a veritable love-in considered Obama has long blamed Bush's economic policies for causing a devastating economic recession that lingers to this day. He's also warned that his current rival for the White House, Mitt Romney, would offer more of the same.

As recently as a week ago, Obama assailed Romney for an economic platform he said rewards the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

"That was tried, remember? The last guy did all this," Obama said.

And yet it's hardly the first time current and past presidents have hit it off, despite their public, political differences.

According to a new book, "The President's Club," Herbert Hoover and Harry S. Truman had a tight relationship.

In 1962, John F. Kennedy asked his predecessor, Dwight D. Eisenhower, for advice during the Cuban missile crisis.

And Bush's father, 41st president George H. W. Bush, once famously said he viewed Bill Clinton as another son despite the fact that the former Arkansas governor deprived him of a second term. George W. is also fond of Clinton, the 42nd president.

"Listen, Clinton and I are buddies," Bush said two years ago. "First of all, we're born one month apart. We're now members of the former presidents club. We have done speaking engagements together. And I generally like him."

Clinton, for his part, has waxed poetic about Richard Nixon, according to "The President's Club." Speaking to the book's authors last year, Clinton said Nixon gave him top-notch advice on Russia, adding he annually reread a letter on the subject from the former president.

Israel 2012: Food and Drink

Throughout our trip we had a great time sampling all sorts of local dishes from Galilee to the Dead Sea. Most meals we ate in places that served Mediterranean or Middle Eastern-styles and we were rewarded with several tasty meals filled with little plates of various sides and heavenly smells. Plus, I am proud to say that I ate hummus every day! We also managed to eat at the top two rated Jerusalem restaurants according to TripAdvisor. :)

Big Ben and Restaurant, Tiberius
After flying halfway around the world, waiting over an hour for the rental car and then driving 3 hours, I was ready for some food and a beer. So, we set off to the main promenade in Tiberius. Many places looked okay, but this place was fairly full on a Thursday night and once we ordered and the food starting arriving, we knew we made the right decision. The service was a little slow but the food was all delicious. Kebobs, hummus, and more salads and sides than I can fit in one photo?

Rooster Cafe (?), Nazareth
After wandering around several churches, we had to grab a quick snack while we still had time on the meter so we picked this place adjacent to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation. The hummus was just okay and it inexplicably took the waitress an extra 10 minutes to bring out the pita bread after the hummus arrived, but the fried pastries were good. Eric also enjoyed a lemonade with mint.

Shiri Bistro, Rosh Pina
I made a reservation in advance because many restaurants close early on Fridays due to Shabbat. We sat outside on the covered patio and ordered a bottle of sparkling rose and some stuffed figs to start. Each of us ordered a different pasta dish and all were spectacular. My sweet potato gnocchi were delicious, with the right amount of sweetness. We ended the evening with a glass of wine in the wine bar, where the bartender helpfully let us sample a few Israeli wines to make a selection. This restaurant had the most extensive selection of wines from Israel on our trip and was well worth the drive from Tiberius.

Taj Mahal, Ein Bokek
This resort town on the Dead Sea only had a few dining options outside of hotels, and McDonald?s doesn?t cut it on our list, so I made reservations here before we left. The restaurant is in a large tent with seating on floor cushions surrounded by pillows in front of a low table. A bottle of Cava was the best deal and it complimented our salads, hummus and kebobs well. The red tomato stuff (which I now know to be matbucha and have made a few times since our return) and the olives were a big hit, and the Israeli salad was absolutely enormous, enough for 3-4 people easily. My only gripe was with the pita bread, the ones on top were hot but on the bottom they were chilly, very inconsistent.

Located just around the corner from our hotel, this basement restaurant was very charming. Our waitress, Gil, was full of knowledge about the food and we really enjoyed the rustic style of the dishes both visually and taste-wise. This place was very busy with waitstaff flying around the room, so even though we had to wait a bit for more bread, etc, there was always an apology.

Glen Bar, Jerusalem
We left the ?rents back at the hotel after dinner on two nights and ventured out to Glen Bar just down the road from the hotel. In addition to a good selection of Belgian beers they also have several Israeli craft beers on tap (i.e. not the typical Gold Star), and the bartender our first night was helpful in describing them. We also appreciated the grunge English music and the signs boasting about 80+ single malt scotches.

Our guides directed us to this unassuming place in the Jewish Quarter for a quick sandwich under the shade of some umbrellas. I cannot find the name of it anywhere but it?s on the corner of Misgav Ladach and Tiferet Israel streets near the Western Wall. You can get any type of sandwich and the choice of additions is dizzying. Believe me when I say you only need a little bit of the ?spicy stuff?!

Fuccacia Bar, Jerusalem
Recommended by our hotel and a short walk away, this lively place was a good option for dinner. The food came out lighting fast, in fact it beat our bottle of wine, and everything was great. My gnocchi was pillow soft and delicious and Eric?s ?focaccia? was enormous! Thankfully, it was hollow on the inside and once deflated became a reasonable portion of flatbread with various toppings. The turnover was very quick and a large screen was displaying the Man U vs Man City soccer game, so I think it attracts a lot of ex-pats. It was also the least expensive dinner of the three in Jerusalem.

Armenian Tavern, Jerusalem
We stopped in here for lunch on our second day in Jerusalem and at first it looks like you are entering an antique shop as you take the staircase down to the basement. I tried a Palestinian beer, Taybeh, which was a good thirst-quencher. The hummus was very tasty and Eric enjoyed his cucumber salad. My sausage was a little, well, crispy, for my tastes but I think that?s just how they cook everything here, well-done.

The Eucalyptus, Jerusalem
For our last dinner in Jerusalem, we went with a restaurant that served authentic biblical food. With menu items like Jacob and Esau?s red lentil stew and Nahaphoch-Hou (Maglubeh), a casserole dish of chicken, rice and vegetables presented with great flair by the chef himself, it was hard to go wrong here. For a place that?s been featured in the New York Times on multiple occasions, I found the restaurant reasonably priced, stylish and welcoming. Our waitress even brought out a bottle of their homemade Arak for us to try when we passed on dessert? none of us are huge fans of liquorice but could appreciate the strong drink.

Healing America's Education Ailments - San Jose Inside

If ?public? education were a patient in the hospital, it would be on life support with a team of expert doctors conversing about its next procedure. During this quadrennial presidential election year we once again have a unique opportunity to frame the issue in ways that demonstrate care for the struggling patient. The conversation on next steps must involve the two presidential contenders, Mitt Romney and President Obama.

Dr. Francis W. Peabody closed a lecture at his medical school course at Harvard on Oct. 21, 1925, with the following phrase, ??for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.? That is the exact opposite of what Governor Romney proclaimed in his ?A Chance For Every Child? white paper released last week. The plan is subtitled ?Mitt Romney?s Plan for Restoring the Promise of American Education.?

The forward is by Jeb Bush. I fully agree with former Gov. Bush when he writes, ??the shortcomings of the American educational system are most devastating for minorities and the poor. Our ability to meet these challenges will determine not only the success of our economy, but our very future as a democracy.? But the path Romney and Bush advocate to deal with its shortcomings will cause the patient to flat line and the country to disintegrate into a fallen superpower status by the middle of this century.

The pro-choice and pro-voucher agenda will continue to weaken the ill patient. The white paper never mentions the one thing that helps students, quality early childhood education. We must discuss the need the $600 billion spent each year on this nation?s defense budget compared to the $25 billion that goes to our federal education budget for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA/NCLB). The nation?s HeadStart early childhood education budget only funds 50 percent of those who qualify with a family income of less than $25,000 a year for a family of four.

You might remember that four years ago there was a national initiative called ?Ed in ?08.? Billionaires Eli Broad and Bill Gates spent more than $60 million to make public education the top issue to be addressed in the presidential race. Needless to say, the effort was a flop. Each presidential debate was lucky to have one question directed at public education. And four years later, we have continued to place the number one issue of our time, the severest national security issue America has ever faced, low on the totem pole.

The political leaders of this country must elevate public education to the most pressing issue of the day. It deserves national discourse commensurate with our predilection to wage war and fight terror. The 34-page White Paper placed online last week by the Romney For President team deserves its time in the sun for all of us to see and dissect. President Obama?s Race to The Top effort has paid some dividends for improving schools and student achievement, but its major tenets should be debated on the highest of levels, too.

I appeal to the Commission on Presidential Debates to focus the Oct. 16 debate at Hofstra University on public education age 0-22?including early childhood, K-12, and community colleges through university education. The vital signs of public education as a patient will be vastly improved by the attention and focus.?

?Our education system is crucial to the vibrancy of our society, the strength of our economy, and the future of our children,? Romney?s white paper says in its one-page conclusion.

If Romney truly believes this, American education must then become the focus of this year?s presidential election. Doing so would show America cares for its patient.

On Sunday, Justin Bieber's squeaky-clean reputation took a hit as the singer allegedly launched into a physical altercation with a paparazzo.

NBC News correspondent Kristen Dahlgren delivered the details on TODAY Monday morning.

Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez were said to be leaving a shopping center when the trouble began. Witnesses claim they saw the teen idol rush from a van for a face-to-face confrontation with a photographer who'd been seen taking photos of the young couple.

Deputies were called to the scene, but witnesses revealed that Bieber and Gomez left before they arrived.

NKorean farmers cite grave drought; aid unlikely

NAMPHO, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea is reporting a serious drought that could worsen already critical food shortages, but help is unlikely to come from the United States and South Korea following Pyongyang's widely criticized rocket launch.

North Korea has had little rain since April 27, with the country's western coastal areas particularly hard hit, according to a government weather agency in Pyongyang. The dry spell threatened to damage crops, officials said, as the country enters a critical planting season and as food supplies from the last harvest dwindle.

In at least one area of South Phyongan Province where journalists from The Associated Press were allowed to visit, the sun-baked fields appeared parched and cracked, and farmers complained of extreme drought conditions. Deeply tanned men, and women in sun bonnets, worked over cabbages and corn seedlings. Farmers cupped individual seedlings as they poured water from blue buckets onto the parched red soil.

"I've been working at the farm for more than 30 years, but I have never experienced this kind of severe drought," An Song Min, a farmer at the Tokhae Cooperative Farm in the Nampho area, told the AP.

It was not clear whether the conditions around Nampho were representative of a wider region. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said it had not yet visited the affected regions to confirm the extent and severity of the reported drought.

North Korea has suffered chronic food shortages for the past two decades because of economic and agricultural mismanagement as well as natural disasters. A famine in the 1990s killed an estimated hundreds of thousands of people.

North Korea state media has publicized the drought but hasn't asked for international handouts. The country's past appeals for food aid have been met with some skepticism, however, amid worries that aid would be diverted to the military and Pyongyang elite without reaching the hungry.

The U.S. government suspended food handouts to North Korea in 2009 after Pyongyang expelled foreign food distribution monitors.

In February, the U.S. reversed course and agreed to provide 240,000 metric tons of food aid in exchange for a freeze in nuclear and missile activities.

However, the deal collapsed after North Korea launched a long-range rocket last month in what it called a failed attempt to send a satellite into space to study the weather.

The launch was widely criticized by the United States and others as a thinly disguised attempt to test missile technology in violation of both the U.S. food deal and U.N. bans on North Korean ballistic tests. The launch drew U.N. Security Council condemnation.

"The United States would like to get to a place where we could once again contemplate providing nutritional assistance to North Korea," Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy for North Korea, said last week. "Sadly, that is not the case right now, in the wake of their decision, in March, to announce" the rocket launch.

Pyongyang is heavily reliant on its only major ally, China, for diplomatic protection in the United Nations and for much of its food, trade and oil.

After taking office in 2008, South Korea's conservative government cut off the large-scale direct food aid that North Korea received from previous liberal governments, saying Pyongyang should first take steps toward nuclear disarmament.

North Korea's dry spell is expected to last until the end of the month, the country's State Hydrometeorological Administration said.

Bureaucrats and workers have been mobilized to irrigate farms, repair wells and keep water-pumping equipment operating, state media reported.

Seedlings are being moved from seed beds to the fields, where they need enough moisture to form strong roots, Percy Misika, the Food and Agriculture Organization's representative for China, North Korea and Mongolia, said Monday from Beijing.

"Any dry spell at this critical time means the seedlings are definitely going to wilt away, and there will be no harvest at the end of the day," he said.

Misika said FAO officials are trying to visit areas suffering from a lack of rain. "If it's going to last for one or two weeks more, it's going to be critical, but if it's a shorter period of time there could be hope," he said.

Droughts are common in spring, winter and autumn in North Korea, the FAO said in a special report late last year. Climate change has led to more extreme weather, making winters colder, summers packed with more intense rain and typhoons, and droughts more frequent and prolonged, it said.

South Korea's Korea Meteorological Administration said it could not confirm the dry spell without on-the-ground equipment, though satellite photos have shown no big rain clouds over North Korea since late April. North Korean dispatches sent to an international weather center also show the country has had little rain over the past month, spokesman Jang Hyun-sik said in Seoul.

Thank you for this interview, Joshua. When we had you on tour before, I don?t think you had any idea at that point you were going to get a contract from Simon & Schuster for this new book, DARKROOM, am I correct?

Joshua: That?s correct. I have always querried my books out to publishers, but for some reason, Simon & Schuster was the publisher I?d always dreamed of working with. So when the Howard Books imprint of Simon Schuster offered me a contract, I was thrilled.

So after you finished your tour last time, where did you go from there? Is that when you started writing DARKROOM, or was it at least in the planning stages?

Joshua: The truth is, DARKROOM was already completed and I?d been sending it out to various publishers, even as BEYOND JUSTICE was gaining ground on the bestseller lists.

I know you must have been thrilled to get the call. Do you remember your initial reaction?

Joshua: I got ?the call? in the form of an email. It was during my daily prayer time in which I don?t usually have my computer on, much less check my inbox. But somehow, this day, while I was deep in prayer, I got this nudge in my spirit to go check on the email which had just caused my computer to chime. Usually, I don?t allow this kind of distraction, but this time, I just did?not sure why.

Well, when the screen displayed my email list, there was a message from an editor at Howard Books with an attachment that simply said ?Happy Monday. Please see attachment.? And when I scrolled down, I saw that the attachment was a MS word .doc file entitled ?Offer Letter.?

Before even opening it, I let out such an excited shout that Kangadog (my goldendoodle) leapt into the air in surprise. I?m glad nobody was home, or they might have done the same. I kept shouting my praise and thanks to God. Naturally, I grabbed my Bible, my manuscript for DARKROOM and fell on my knees just thanking The Lord over and over. I knew that He had plans for my writing. And like He always does, He knocked my socks off with His blessings!

I guess you could say I had a positive reaction.

Take us through the journey. After you received word that S&S was going to publish your book, what was the next step?

Joshua: The next step was negotiating the contract. That took a few months, and I hired a great IP attorney to represent me. It was a very cordial and friendly experience. We all made the necessary compromises to come to a happy agreement and then I was free to announce the big news (almost 3 months after the offer letter) to my waiting fans. I had the biggest number of hits in the history of my website ever that day.

What happened after that?

Joshua: Then came the editorial process. They told me that the manuscript I sent them was unusually well-polished, and for that, I would like to thank my dear friend Christy Giangreco for helping me with the original proof-reading and copy-editing. But Simon & Schuster put another 2 or 3 pairs of eyes on the Manuscript and they took it to another level, doing fact-checking, making sure the accents in the Vietnamese language terms went in the right direction, etc. I?m amazed at the level of detail they went into bringing this book to the editorial level it is now. I?m blessed with such a team of kind and professional editors to work with including: Becky Nesbitt, Holly Halvorsen, Jessica Wong, and everyone else who helped bring DARKROOM to publication.

What major publicity does S&S have planned for your book?

Joshua: S&S is helping me get onto the media (radio, television, public speaking, etc.,) to get the word out about DARKROOM, and to give me an opportunity to speak on topics related to my books. Interestingly, a lot of those venues will focus on me, the author, and my life and career, and topics about which I?m passionate.

What are your plans now? Do you have another book in the works?

Joshua: As I always say, a writer ALWAYS has another book in the works. I have at least two titles I?m completing even as we speak. One of them is by Ian Alexander, my pen name for Fantasy (epic and contemporary) books.

Thank you again for this interview, Joshua. Do you have any words of advice for others who would like to be in your shoes right now?

Joshua: You?re most welcome! It?s such an honor to share my thoughts and experience here. There are so many different paths for people to reach their dreams. But the best path is through finding out what you were created to do and be. That comes through knowing your creator personally and understanding His design for you. Only then can you truly flow in your gifts and abilities. Once you start to do that, you?ll find that even though the circumstances of life don?t necessarily change for the better, you will overcome the challenging ones, and attract the wonderful, fun, fulfilling ones.
