Gael Garcia Bernal as René Saavedra in the Sony Pictures Classics film "No". Gael Garc?a Bernal anchors the film as the materialistic, half-bright but ultimately goodhearted Ren?

Photo by Tom?s Dittburn/Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics

Pablo Larra?n?s No, the story of a Chilean advertising executive who half-unwillingly joins forces with a campaign to oust dictator Augusto Pinochet, was one of the nominees for this year?s Best Foreign Film Oscar. In a year when there was only one foreign film on everyone?s lips?Michael Haneke?s austere old-age drama, Amour?it?s not surprising that No, a sly political satire with a deliberately scruffy visual aesthetic, neither won the prize nor got a lot of Oscar-season attention. (Did we even get an audience-reaction shot of Gael Garc?a Bernal in a tux? And if so, can someone please send me a GIF?) But I really hope No?s nomination helps get people into theaters to see it, because it may be the best movie I?ve seen this year?although given the quality of most January and February releases, that feels like wan praise. Put it this way: There will have to be a hell of a lot of good movies released in 2013 for No not to make my list of the year?s 10 best.

What I love about No is how seriously it takes the humor of its premise. Larra?n (who also directed Tony Manero, a bizarre but unforgettable character study of a John Travolta-obsessed loner in Pinochet-era Santiago) is interested in the parallels between commercial advertising and political propaganda. But Larra?n's aim isn?t limited to pointing out those parallels and then encouraging us to laugh hollowly at the crassness of modern consumer society. Instead, the film explores the productive tensions between two competing sets of assumptions about mass media: The rebels? passionate belief that simply telling the grim truth about the Pinochet regime will be enough to mobilize public sentiment against it, and the ad exec?s pragmatic conviction that such truths tend to go down better with an extra-large spoonful of sugar.

The movie opens in 1988, when Pinochet?who had been installed in a coup with the help of the CIA 15 years earlier?decided to shore up his international legitimacy by holding a plebiscite election to decide whether he should continue as president. Though there was widespread suspicion the election would be rigged, it nonetheless served as an opportunity for the Chilean resistance to marshal public opinion: The Pinochet regime agreed to give the opposition 15 minutes of time per night on state-run television to make its case for the dictator to step down.?

After dispensing with this historical setup in a few cleverly designed title cards, the movie introduces us to Ren? Saavedra (Bernal), the son of a Chilean dissident long exiled in Mexico. Now back in Santiago, Ren? is working as a well-paid ?creative? at a large ad agency. When we first meet him, he?s showing some clients an ad campaign for a soft drink called Free. His pitch is interrupted by leftist organizer Jos? Tom?s Urrutia (Chilean TV star and Tom Wilkinson look-alike Luis Gnecco), a contemporary of his father, who?s trying to recruit him to design the campaign for the resistance movement?s nightly 15 minutes of fame. Meanwhile, Ren??s boss at the ad agency (Alfredo Castro, or, as Tony Manero viewers will shout in unison, ?Tony Manero!?) is hired as a consultant for the other side. Ren??s lack of interest in politics is matched only by his lack of comprehension of it?asked by his boss if he?s a Communist, he responds indignantly, ?No! I?m ? the other one?? He?s more motivated by the prospect of winning back his ex-wife (Antonia Zegers), who comes over almost nightly to tuck in their son?and who?s actively involved in the political struggle he?s being paid to package and sell.

What ensues is a darkly hilarious volley of escalating rhetoric from both sides, as the drama among the real-life players alternates with long excerpts from the nightly propaganda battle on television. This middle section masterfully weaves archival footage into fiction, a commingling that?s enabled in part by the fact that Larra?n shot the whole film on washed out, cruddy-looking ?80s-era video that matches the visual style of the clips. The catchy ?We Are the World?-style anthem Ren? commissions from a jingle writer for the campaign really did exist, as did the manically upbeat music video that goes along with it. What we see are imagined behind-the-scenes moments during the making of these Chilean cultural landmarks, as Ren? contends with poor shooting conditions, shoestring budgets, and the dismay of his colleagues on the campaign. Some of the more militant leftists leave the cause in disgust at his saccharine, populist, and politically empty strategies for mass outreach. It?s not torture expos?s or interviews with the families of desaparecidos that will win their side victory, he insists, but rainbow T-shirts, upbeat platitudes, and sexy girls.

Garc?a Bernal anchors the film as the materialistic, half-bright but ultimately goodhearted Ren?. Like the younger Brad Pitt, he is one of those actors who's so outrageously beautiful he rarely gets the chance to play ordinary dudes, even though it's a style of character he happens to excel at. Sporting a scraggly mullet with a little rat-tail at the back, his relatively small stature left more apparent than it is in most of his movies, Garc?a Bernal gets to tests his range as a comic actor. He proves to be not only consistently hilarious, but also able to pivot on a dime from comedy to drama as the tension between the regime and the resistance, and between Ren? and his ex-wife, heat up in the movie?s last act.

No has been a highly controversial film in its country of origin, for reasons that recall the debate about Argo and its representation of the Iran hostage crisis. Many who were involved on the ground with the Chilean resistance in 1988 feel that the movie warped history by exaggerating the importance of this particular ad campaign, and advertising in general, in the eventual success of the movement. And Larra?n himself?who, though he was still a child when the regime ended, is the son of a well-known right-wing politician and businessman?has been criticized for trivializing real-life political struggle by turning it into comedy. As a non-Chilean, I can only say that this portrait of a slick salesman who turns crisis into opportunity strikes me as anything but opportunistic and slick. It?s the rare political satire that can sound the depths of irony as No does and still end on a note of ambivalent hope.

Senate panel hearing from Newtown father, doctor

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Neil Heslin says it's all about his slain son, Jesse.

Heslin, a 50-year-old construction worker, says he normally pays little attention to politics. But he was yanked painfully into the middle of the nation's gun debate last December, when his 6-year-old son, Jesse, along with 19 other first-graders and six educators, was shot dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"It's a burden, it's more than a burden on me," Heslin said in an interview Tuesday as he and three dozen others ? including other Newtown families and relatives of other mass shooting victims ? arrived in Washington for two days of lobbying lawmakers. "But I have to do it for my little boy."

Heslin is set to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday in support of legislation by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to ban assault weapons.

Other witnesses testifying to the Senate panel include William Begg, an emergency room doctor who treated Newtown victims that day, and U.S. attorney John Walsh from Colorado.

"Guns that are fashioned from war don't belong on the streets," Feinstein said Tuesday, acknowledging that her legislation to ban assault weapons faced difficult odds in Congress. "Maybe I've just seen too much from my days as mayor and watching this stuff for 30 years."

Feinstein, who rose to become San Francisco mayor, was on the city's board of supervisors in 1978 when Mayor George Moscone and supervisor Harvey Milk were fatally shot in City Hall.

Across the Capitol on Wednesday, the House Education and Workforce Committee planned to hear from school safety experts and counselors about how to keep students safe.

Witnesses testifying to the Republican-controlled House panel were expected to emphasize the role of school resource officers ? security professionals who are often armed and can double as informal counselors and liaisons to law enforcement. Those officers are commonplace in many schools and help officials develop safety plans.

Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resource Officers, was among those slated to testify, along with a school counselor and a school safety director.

Heslin and his group met with around six lawmakers and aides Tuesday, mostly Senate Democrats from Republican-leaning states. Participants said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said he would try to help and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., expressed optimism that the Senate would produce gun legislation, but neither committed to anything specific.

In his prepared Senate testimony, Heslin said he's been told his son died yelling to people to run. He said Jesse was hit by one bullet grazing the side of his head, another hitting his forehead.

"That means the last thing my son did was look Adam Lanza straight in the face and scream to his classmates to run," Heslin said, referring to the 20-year-old who committed the massacre. "The last thing he saw was that coward's eyes."

Despite the raw emotion, Feinstein's effort to ban assault weapons is expected to fall short due to opposition by the National Rifle Association and many Republicans, plus wariness by moderate Democrats.

Feinstein's bill has attracted 21 co-sponsors, all Democrats. Including herself, it is sponsored by eight of the 10 Judiciary panel Democrats ? precarious for a committee where Democrats outnumber Republicans 10-8. Democrats on the panel who haven't co-sponsored the measure include the chairman, Pat Leahy of Vermont, who said Monday he hadn't seen the bill.

President Barack Obama made bans on assault weapons and large capacity magazines key parts of the gun curbs he proposed in January in response to the Connecticut school massacre.

The cornerstone of his package is a call for universal background checks for gun buyers, some version of which seems to have a stronger chance of moving through Congress. Currently, only sales by federally licensed gun dealers require such checks, which are designed to prevent criminals and others from obtaining firearms.

Obama also proposed providing more money to school districts to hire school resource officers and counselors and take other safety steps.

Feinstein's bill would ban future sales of assault weapons and magazines carrying more than 10 rounds of ammunition but exempt those that already exist. It would bar sales, manufacturing and imports of semiautomatic rifles and pistols that can use detachable magazines and have threaded barrels or other military features. The measure specifically bans 157 firearms but excludes 2,258 others in an effort to avoid barring hunting and sporting weapons.

Feinstein, who helped create a 1994 assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, and other supporters cite studies showing use of the firearms in crimes diminished while the prohibition lasted. A 2004 report said the proportion of gun crimes involving assault weapons dropped by up to 72 percent in five cities studied.

Opponents cite data from that same study showing assault weapons were used in only 2 percent to 8 percent of gun crimes, arguing that a ban would have little impact. The study also estimated there were 1.5 million assault weapons owned privately in the U.S. in 1994, and an estimated 30 million high-capacity magazines as of 1999, which critics say means exempting them would diminish a ban's effect

Video Game Reviews | Aliens: Colonial Marines | RotoRob

As I?ve noted many times over the years, I am a huge fan of the Aliens franchise, specifically the first two films, which both hold up quite well outside of a few brutal special effects sequences. So to say that my anticipation level was at a fever pitch for the oft-delayed Colonial Marines would be something of an understatement ? I was ready to be wowed. Unfortunately, Sega?s latest effort never fulfills its lofty promise and ends up settling in as a generic third-person shooter.

CONTROLS (3.5/5)

When playing as a marine the controls are standard Call of Duty fare. You click the analog sticks to sprint and melee, left trigger aims down the sight and right trigger fires your weapon. Most guns also have a secondary fire mode, such as the pulse rifle?s grenade launcher, that can be used via the right bumper, while the classic motion tracker is activated with the left bumper. Hold down one of the face buttons and a weapon wheel will appear with options (primary, pistol and explosive) mapped to the d-pad for quick shuffling.

In multiplayer you?ll also spend rounds playing as a xenomorph, which can be dicey. Each type has its own primary and secondary attacks, and they can all climb walls and unleash fatal blows. However, it?s easy to get disoriented when crawling around upside down in an effort to ambush unsuspecting marines below. Plus, it seemed a little too easy to get caught on invisible objects ? never a good thing when you?re trying to evade gun fire.

GRAPHICS/SOUND (2.5/5)

For a game that has been in development as long as Colonial Marines to have as many graphical hiccups as it does is equal parts surprising and disappointing. Listing them all would be a pointless endeavour so I?ll focus on the most damning one: missing animations. Far too often firefights with the aliens concluded with the creature essentially disappearing amid spurts of acid blood. Contrasting that with the epic way xenomorphs were torn asunder from pulse rifle fire in the film further diminishes the sense that you?re killing a truly dangerous creature.

Humans (friend and foe alike) are not immune to these shortcomings, either. Your squad mates have an awkwardness to their movements that makes it tough to become immersed in the settings, which while looking technically outdated still do a decent job of setting the appropriate tone. There are definitely moments when things click and you feel a sense of desperation, however, such moments are fleeting, and too infrequent to overcome the game?s many visual problems.

In-game dialogue is unremarkable, and I never felt invested in the new characters. Even tracking down Michael Biehn (Hicks) and Lance Henriksen (Bishop) to reprise their roles doesn?t do enough to elevate the vocal performances. The soundtrack, on the other hand, is quite good and does a strong job of creating a sense of continuity between the game and the film. Aliens? signature sound effects are present as well.

GAMEPLAY (2.75/5)

Long heralded as official Alien?s canon ? much to the excitement of fans like me that loved the second film and detested how quickly it was all thrown away in the third one ? Colonial Marines offers up a paper thin story that pretty much trashes the franchise?s established timeline. I won?t get into the plot holes, other than the obvious one that the game is set almost entirely in a place that was supposedly destroyed in a nuclear explosion at the end of Aliens, but suffice to say that any fan of the series that was looking forward to top-flight exposition will be disappointed.

Set 17 weeks after Hicks, Ripley, Newt and half of Bishop escape Hadley?s Hope on LV-426, you play as Corporal Christopher Winter, who is part of a search-and-rescue team sent to investigate what happened to the crew of the Sulaco. Upon arriving you find that the xenomorphs have been busy, and that the nefarious Weyland-Yutani corporation has already sent a team of mercenaries in advance of your arrival to study the potentially lucrative bio-weapon. Naturally, things go to hell in short order, and a new group of marines are thrown into the fire.

For most of the game you?ll serve as part of a two- or three-person team. I must caution that I use the term ?team? loosely, as friendly A.I. is largely unhelpful. Numerous times they allowed aliens to attack on my six and generally offered precious little help in most firefights. Enemy A.I. isn?t much better, either, as xenomorphs tend to charge straight ahead (rarely utilizing their superior elusiveness and speed to their advantage) and mercs are only too happy to let you circle around their cover.

Even with a rough plot and sketchy A.I., Colonial Marines does find a degree of success as an atmospheric shooter. Sprinkled throughout the game?s 11-mission campaign are some very enjoyable moments, highlighted by your initial encounter with the xenomorphs, which hints at the type of white knuckle appeal these creatures boast. Ultimately, there is too much of an arcade feel to the five-hour campaign given the subject matter, but it was engaging enough that I played through it a second time.

To encourage exploration (and potentially replay) each mission offers several hidden items as well consisting of dog tags, audio logs and ?legendary? weapons such as Vasquez?s ass-kicking smart gun or Hudson?s pulse rifle. These guns are more powerful than the standard versions, but they cannot be upgraded and do not count toward completing in-game challenges.

Colonial Marines? leveling system is fairly well done with both single- and multi-player experience combining to buff up your marine?s arsenal and appearance. Killing enemies, finding collectibles and finishing missions all provide XP. In addition, there are three challenges available at a given time that, when completed, offer up some bonus experience. The issue with these is that they are done sequentially, and thus fulfilling the criteria for the 10th challenge is meaningless if you haven?t completed the ninth one. In some ways, that makes them feel like a cheap ploy to force you to replay specific sections to successfully complete the challenges.

Online multiplayer is also available, and if you can stick with it long enough to get a feel for the alien controls it?s actually pretty enjoyable. Marines operate just like they do in the campaign while the xenomorphs can see through walls, crawl through tunnels and drop down from ceilings to help even up the odds. Even with those abilities it?s rare to see the aliens come out on top as the human side just seems to be packing too much firepower.

Of the available adversarial modes (Team Deathmatch, Escape, Survival and Extermination) I found Escape to be the most interesting as you join forces with other gamers to make a fevered run for an extraction zone with xenomorphs nipping at your heels. The downside, however, is that there are a mere two maps on offer for that mode. Not exactly ideal for long-term replay value.

OVERALL (2.5/5)

If you were hoping Aliens: Colonial Marines was going to be the franchise?s defining gaming experience you?re going to be disappointed. Both the campaign and multiplayer have moments that suggest what could have been? what?s here, though, never reaches its full potential.

What is a Telephone System ,The Different Types ... - Communications

By Steven P. Garrison

What is a telephone system? If you do not know much about telephone systems, you may not have the right phone system for your company. A phone system is one of the things that any successful company, company or firm must have to conduct business effectively. The different types of phone systems that are commonly used are: PBX systems, Key systems, KSU less systems, Key and PBX system hybrids. As well as being cost-effective, these are also trusty.

For firms and firms that have 10 workers or less, the KSU less system would be perfect. This is due to the fact that this system is limited to 10 extensions. So if a business requires a phone system that may be expanded, has a lot of features and can accommodate more than 10 employees, this isn't the most appropriate choice. They should go for other phone systems like the PBX system.

If you are still asking what is telephone system and its different sorts, continue reading on. The KSU system is another kind of a business telephone system that's more cost-effective than the Key or PBX systems. It is simply installed and works efficiently. This offers portability. For bigger firms, a PBX system may accommodate more than 40 extensions, so this is suited for corporations having more than 40 staff.

During the past, business phone systems could be really high-priced. But in today's world the costs have been reduced dramatically, making telephone systems affordable for little and medium sized firms. The systems have been reconfigured into a compact size so they would fit even a small space in an office. They have leading edge features as well , even more than this of the KSU systems.

A business telephone system provides large and small businesses alike with more efficient communication, and gives the impression of a professional look. For more information about what is the best telephone system, you might want to ask a professional like Level One Communications. Contact them today!

New Line of American Blue Jeans Kicks Ass...and So Does Its Spokesman

Ranger Up announces new line of blue jeans and long term sponsorship with MMA fighter and former Marine Brian Stann.

Durham, NC (PRWEB) February 27, 2013

Calling all troops, veterans, and patriots! Ranger Up?, the apparel company that stands for America first and foremost, is proud to announce the launch of its new line of American made jeans and a long-term sponsorship deal with none other than Mixed Martial Arts fighter ?All American? Brian Stann.

The methodology behind the company hasn?t wavered since it formed seven years ago. Ranger Up stands for the greatness of America and those who serve it. Having begun as a T-shirt company in 2006, Ranger Up is proud to announce its first two styles of mens jeans, which are made one hundred percent in the good old USA right down to the buttons and zippers. Ranger Up jeans are created with the warriors of America in mind: durable, stylish, void of glitz, and as always unapologetic for what the company founders stand for.

?These are jeans for men in the oldest sense of the word,? says founder and CEO Nick Palmisciano stated. ?They?re made for guys who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty or do an honest day's work. They?re created for the warriors who serve their nation in the military, in police departments, in fire departments, in the EMS community, or for the patriotic red-blooded Americans that support those who do. They?re designed for the stalwarts who are there for their friends in good times and bad because they know the true meaning of loyalty. They?re jeans that are manufactured for gentlemen who love our country and work to make it better through the only thing that matters: hard work.?

In addition to the launch of its new line, Ranger Up simultaneously announces the immediate and long-term sponsorship and partnership with MMA fighter Brian Stann. In addition to being a top MMA fighter, Stann, who played linebacker at the Naval Academy before he served as an officer in the Marine Corps, is an Iraq Veteran and recipient of the Silver Star, the nation?s third highest award for valor.

"Brian's service and heroism are well known facts and candidly, as an organization that represents the military and veteran community, that alone would inspire us to partner with him,? adds Palmisciano. ?But the work he?s done since leaving the service is why we love him; founding Hire Heroes USA to help veterans find employment, donating his time to various troop functions and non-profits, and adhering to the high ideals of character of the Marine Corps officer long after his official service ended. He?s an inspirational example for all of us leaving the service and that?s something that our community needs. Who else could we ask to represent us other than Brian??

Ranger Up's All-American jeans will be available in early April for $89. Ranger Up was formed as an apparel company in 2006 by Army veterans for the military and patriotic Americans who love and support the Armed Forces. Ranger Up stands for America, those that serve it, patriots, dogs, and hot chicks.

Geeksphone Keon hands-on: a small Firefox OS phone that has big dreams (video)

Geeksphone Keon hands-on

Geeksphone may be an online phone seller based in Spain, but the name of its lower-end Firefox OS reference phone, Keon, appears to be Dutch. Regardless of the title's origin, the part of the phone that's most intriguing is the fact that it's one of the first to bear Mozilla's mobile platform. It isn't much in the way of specs, and that's easy enough to tell from just glancing at it, thanks to a 3.5-inch HVGA display. Still, the Keon's set of specs is actually on par with the Firefox protocol. This means that for roughly around 100 euros, we can expect to see a device with a 3MP camera, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, a 1,580mAh battery and a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon S17225A CPU. Don't expect an earth-shattering experience on this kind of phone, as it's meant to reside strictly on the low end. The Keon will be making its way onto the official company store in the next few weeks, so stay tuned. In the meantime, we've made a lovely video and photo gallery below, so check them out.

Libertarian paternalism and school lunches: Guiding healthier behavior while preserving choices

Feb. 26, 2013 ? The term 'libertarian paternalism' is a peculiar phrase because it invokes feelings about two seemingly contradictory philosophies. Yet, as a principle of the behavioral sciences, this phrase actually implies gentle guidance, without force.

Recently, the USDA passed regulations designed to make school lunches more nutritious. Schools participating in the National School Lunch Program are required to increase whole grain offerings, cap the fat of milk at 1% for white and non-fat for flavored, and ensure that students take either a fruit or a vegetable with their purchased lunch. Unfortunately, forcing behavior jeopardizes the potential to accomplish the most important goal of improving children's diets. After all, it's not nutrition until it's eaten!

Staying true to the meaning of libertarian paternalism, Cornell University researchers Andrew Hanks, David Just and Brian Wansink conducted a field study in two of high school cafeterias to test whether low- and no-cost environmental changes could lead children to take and eat healthier foods. Under the name, "Smarter Lunchrooms Makeover," they tested multiple small changes such as making fruits and vegetables more attractive, convenient, and normative, all simple applications of libertarian paternalism.

Make the Fruit More Visible

After the "makeover" was implemented, students were 13% more likely to take fruits and 23% more likely to take vegetables. These are very encouraging results, but selection is only half of the battle!

To check the consumption of the fruits and vegetables selected, Hanks, Just and Wansink recorded whether food items were completely eaten, half eaten or not eaten at all. They found that students not only took more fruits and vegetables, but actual consumption increased by 18% for fruits and by 25% for vegetables. They also found that after the makeover the percentage of kids eating a whole serving of fruit increased by 16% and by 10% for vegetables.

These small changes, based on the principle of libertarian paternalism, cost three hours of time and less than $50 to implement. Evidence from the results demonstrates that this "makeover" not only preserves choice but also can 'nudge' children toward healthier behaviors that they can carry with them into adulthood, contributing to the fight against current childhood obesity trends!

Furthermore, these simple changes could also be effective in the cafeterias of other organizations, including hospitals, companies, and retirement homes, as well as within the walls of your very own home.

Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340

The Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340 ($619.99 list) is a solid entry-level Windows 8-equipped laptop that belongs to Toshiba's value-oriented Satellite C series. Entry-level systems are all about trade-offs, so while it needs to ditch perks like a touch screen or a Blu-ray player, the Satellite C875-S7340 is nevertheless capable of delivering decent performance for daily tasks and even packs a few niceties, including a large display, full-size keyboard, and 6GB of RAM.For users on a budget, it's worth checking out.

Design and Features
Measuring 1.3 by 16.2 by 10.6 inches (HWD), the Satellite C875-S7340 isn't exactly a petite laptop, but its slim profile helps reduce unnecessary bulk. Moreover, its weight of 5.49 pounds is relatively light for its size. This can be attributed to its all-plastic chassis, which is decked out in what Toshiba dubs "Mercury Silver." Its glossy lid and textured palm rest make for an interesting visual contrast.

The black keyboard and touch pad, meanwhile, complement the silver finish. Rather than sporting the island-style keys that are currently en vogue, its raised keys abut one another in a manner reminiscent of older keyboards. While the absence of backlighting is forgivable at this price point, the same can't be said of the keyboard's shallow travel and noticeable flexing. Taken together, the effect makes for a less than ideal typing experience, especially if you need to type something longer than a quick email like, say, a term paper. On the plus side, though, the keyboard is offers plenty of real estate, so much so that it even includes a dedicated numeric keypad. The touchpad sports the same textured finish as the palm rest and supports the usual pinch, swipe, and rotate functions.

The Satellite C875-S7340's 17.3-inch LED backlit display has a maximum resolution of 1,600 by 900, making it capable of supporting 720P content. All said, the display is easy on the eyes, and its glossy coating lends itself to bright colors and crisp text. Speakers housed in a horizontal grille directly above the keyboard don't go too loud, making them adequate for one to two people in small room. If you plan on listening to dialogue closely in an area with some background noise, though, you're better off using headphones. The Satellite C875-S7340 features a tray-loading DVD burner.

The I/O port selection on the Satellite C875-S7340 is on par with what you'd expect at this price. Like the Acer Aspire V5-571-6891, it only has one USB 3.0 port, which can be found on the right side of the system alongside a USB 2.0 port, VGA and HDMI outputs, an Ethernet port, and headphone and microphone jacks. The left side, meanwhile, houses another USB 2.0 port next to the system's DVD burner, and a memory card reader is housed in the front of the system.

The Satellite C875-S7340's 640GB 5,400rpm hard drive offers ample storage space. It does, however, come with a sizable serving of preloaded software that you'll need to wade through. It ranges from useful (Microsoft Office Starter 2010, a full version of Origin) to delete-on-arrival bloatware (WildTangent Games, Microsoft Essentials, links to eBay and Netflix). There's also a large amount of proprietary software (Toshiba BookPlace, Toshiba Media Player, Toshiba Disc Creator, Toshiba Video Player, and so on) and trial software (30-day trial of Norton Online Backup and 60 days of Norton Internet Security). While this slew of included software is forgivable since it ultimately contributes to the Satellite C875-S7340's affordable price tag, be prepared to cordon off a block of time to shovel through everything if you prefer starting with a clean slate. The Satellite C875-S7340 is covered by a one-year limited warranty.

Performance
Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340

With its 2.4GHz Intel Core i3-3110M processor and 6GB RAM, the Satellite C875-S7340 churned out solid scores on our benchmark tests. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,503 points outperformed the rest of its class like the Asus U56E-BBL6 (2,255 points) and the Lenovo IdeaPad Z570-10249ZU (2,376 points). It couldn't beat the Asus VivoBook S400CA-UH51 score of 3,013 points. Its processing speed was also apparent on our Cinebench R11.5 test, where its score of 2.41 points was on equal footing with the Toshiba Satellite P845-S4200 (2.41 points) while falling short of only the Asus U56E-BBL6 (2.68 points) and the Lenovo IdeaPad Z570-10249ZU (2.71 points).

The Satellite C875-S7340 displayed surprising agility in our multimedia tests. It completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in a brisk 1 minute 28 seconds, easily outpacing the Aspire V5-571-6891 (1:57) and, to a greater extent, the Asus VivoBook X202E-DH31T (2:15) and VivoBook S400CA-UH51 (3:00). Similarly, it breezed through our Photoshop CS6 test (5 minutes 47 seconds), nearly forty seconds faster than the VivoBook S400CA-UH51 (6:28) and almost two minutes quicker than the Aspire V5-571-6891 (8:43). The Satellite C875-S7340 also did fairly well on our 3DMark 11 benchmark tests (1,102 points in Entry-level settings and 204 points in Extreme settings), pulling ahead of the Asus S400CA-UH51 (1,101 and 187 points, respectively). All said, the Satellite C875-S7340 demonstrated a moderate capacity for media creation, so while you won't necessarily be able to make a living as a graphic designer, you can still tinker with Photoshop and convert movie files.

Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340

With its integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU, it didn't come as a surprise that the Satellite C875-S7340 was unable to produce a playable frame rate in our gaming tests. Accordingly, its performance in Aliens Vs. Predator (12fps with medium-quality settings in 1,366-by-768 resolution; 5fps with maximum-quality in 1,600-by-900 resolution) landed in the same ballpark as other systems toting the same GPU, like the Aspire V5-571-6891 (10fps and 6fps, respectively) and VivoBook S400CA-UH51 (10fps and 5fps, respectively). The same can be said of its performance in our Heaven benchmark tests (11fps with medium-quality settings in 1,366-by-768 resolution; 4fps with maximum-quality in 1,600-by-900 resolution).

Without a doubt, the Satellite C875-S7340's Achilles heel is its removable 48Whr battery, which lasted for only a paltry 2 hours 39 minutes on our battery rundown test. This came nowhere near the VivoBook X202E-DH31T (3:50), the Aspire V5-571-6891 (4:07), or the VivoBook S400CA-UH51 (4:18). Forget getting through an entire day of work on a single charge ? you'll be lucky to get through more than two episodes of Homeland. In other words, be sure no to stray too far from a power outlet if you plan on getting work done.

The Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340 is a solid entry-level laptop that gives budget-conscious users an opportunity to jump into Windows 8 without having to break the bank or settle for a bare-bones system. It goes beyond merely having the capability to perform day-to-day functions by letting users also dabble in media creation. Still, it's not nearly as good a value as the Acer Aspire V5-571-6891, which offers a similar feature set for over $100 less. Nor is it as future-proofed as the Asus VivoBook S400CA-UH51, an entry-level ultrabook with a touch screen that only costs $80 more. That said, though, the Satellite C875-S7340 is still worth checking out thanks to its affordable price tag and ability to perform day-to-day functions as well as moderate media creation.

Jose Aldo-Anthony Pettis featherweight championship fight back on

Over the weekend, UFC president Dana White said featherweight champion Jose Aldo was refusing to take a fight with Anthony Pettis, the lightweight who was scheduled to fight Aldo in August. As Kevin Iole wrote, Aldo told White he didn't think Pettis had earned the title shot.

The fight is back on. Andre Pederneias, Aldo's manager, told SporTV in Brazil (with translation from our friends at Yahoo! Brazil) that Aldo will take the fight, with one condition:

?I had a meeting today (Monday) with Jos? Aldo, who said: ?I?m going to end with this clownery. People are saying that I?m running, so they are going to see who will run from who when the time comes. If you enjoy a brawl, you can buy the pay-per-view of august 3th and that what you are going to watch because heads will roll?. At that moment I called Dana White to agree with the fight, but on one condition: after that fight, the winner gets a title shot at LW?.

White confirmed that the fight is on.

ESPN is reporting that Aldo will get his wish, and that if he beats Pettis on Aug. 3, he will get a shot at the UFC lightweight belt. Benson Henderson is currently the title holder, and will fight Gilbert Melendez in April.

This means the UFC lightweight belt has a clear path for 2013. Pettis was supposed to be the next lightweight contender, but pushed for the Aldo fight because he didn't want to wait until the Henderson and Melendez fight was over.

Are you looking forward to seeing Aldo possibly fight for the lightweight belt? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

ANA cancels all Dreamliner flights until June | Buying Business Travel

All Nippon Airways (ANA) has announced further cancellations of four international routes from March 31 to May 31 due to the continued grounding of Boeing 787 aircraft.
?
The affected routes are Tokyo Narita-Seattle, Tokyo Narita-San Jose, Osaka Kansai-Seoul Incheon and Nagoya Chubu-Seoul Incheon.

ANA currently has the largest number of Dreamliners in its fleet with 17 of the aircraft.

??ANA has revised all domestic flight schedules on the assumption that operations of the Boeing 787 will not recommence before May 31, 2013,? said the company in a statement. ?Due to the above situation, cancellations and schedule changes have been implemented on certain routes.

??ANA will continue to cooperate with all parties and make all efforts to ensure and confirm the safety of this aircraft, so that B787 flights may recommence as soon as possible.?

The airline will continue to operate the Tokyo Haneda-Frankfurt route because of high demand, but a B777-300ER will be deployed instead of the Dreamliner. This move will actually increase the daily capacity from 158 to 247 passengers.

According to an ANA spokesman, the latest adjustment will increase the total number of flights cancelled due to the Dreamliner grounding to 3,601, with more than 157,800 passengers affected.

All 50 Dreamliners currently in commercial operation have been grounded since January 17 due to concerns about the safety of the aircraft?s lithium batteries which caused one onboard fire after a B787 had landed in Boston and forced another aircraft to make an emergency landing in Japan.

Reports last week suggested that Boeing might be closing in on a solution to the problem with the batteries but has yet to make any official announcement on when the Dreamliner may be able to resume commercial flights.

United has also discounted using most of its six Dreamliners until early June. Although the airline hopes it will be able to launch its Denver-Tokyo service using a B787 on May 12 ? this new route has already been cancelled from its original start date of March 31.

"We are taking the B787 out of our schedule through June 5, except for Denver-Narita, which will tentatively launch on May 12," said United in a statement.

The grounding of the Dreamliner has also led to Japan Airlines postponing the launch of its new Tokyo-Helsinki service. It had been scheduled to start on February 25 and a new launch date has yet to be announced.

Putting malaria on the SHELPH

Monday, February 25, 2013

Experts have disabled a unique member of the signalling proteins which are essential for the development of the malaria parasite. They have produced a mutant lacking the ancient bacterial Shewanella-like protein phosphatase known as SHLP1 (pronounced shelph). This mutant is unable to complete its complex life cycle and is arrested in its development in the mosquito. The discovery could help in the design of new drugs to arrest the spread of this killer disease.

SHLP1is critical to the cellular development of the malaria parasite. It can be found at every stage in the lifecycle of the malaria parasite and for the first time experts led by The University of Nottingham have analysed their biological function.

Dr Rita Tewari and her team in the Centre for Genetics and Genomics in the School of Biology have spent three years studying the phosphatase proteins that are important building blocks in the life cycle of the malaria parasite. The findings of their latest study are published today, 21 February 2013, in the academic journal Cell Reports.

Dr Tewari said: "SHLP1 is absent in humans and can be explored as an excellent target for malaria transmission control. Prevention of malaria transmission to and from the mosquito is vital in order to stop the devastating spread of malaria. Targeting SHLP1 could be an important step to achieve this goal."

Although great strides have been made in reducing the number of deaths from malaria, half the world's population remains at risk from the disease. In 2010 90 per cent of all malaria deaths occurred in Africa ? mostly among children under the age of five.

Dr Tewari's latest research has focused on the ancient bacterial Shewanella-like protein phosphatase (SHLP1) which is found only in bacteria, fungi, protists (organisms which paved the way for the evolution of early plants, animals and fungi) and plants.

The researchers, funded by the MRC and the Wellcome Trust, have discovered how SHLP1 controls development of the parasite at an essential stage of its life cycle. The parasite must move between human and mosquito in its quest to spread the disease. It does this every time the mosquito bites. Removing this enzyme causes defects in structures vital for invading the mosquito gut ? effectively stopping the mosquito from passing the disease on to another victim.

Florida to expand Medicaid under health overhaul

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? Gov. Rick Scott announced plans Wednesday to expand Medicaid coverage to roughly 900,000 more people under the federal health overhaul, a surprise decision from the vocal critic of President Barack Obama's plan.

Scott said he will ask the Legislature to expand the program under a bill that would expire in three years, after which it would require renewed legislative support. He's the seventh Republican governor so far to propose expanding the taxpayer-funded health insurance program.

Scott said he would support the expansion as long as the federal government pays 100 percent of the increased costs, which is the deal offered to states by the Obama administration for the first three years. After that, the federal government said it would pay 90 percent of the cost for the additional enrollees.

The governor said he gained new perspective after his mother's death last year, calling his decision to support a key provision of the Affordable Care Act a "compassionate, common sense step forward," and not a "white flag of surrender to government-run healthcare."

"Before I ever dreamed of standing here today as governor of this great state, I was a strong advocate for better ways to improve healthcare than the government-run approach taken in the President's healthcare law. I believe in a different approach. But, regardless of what I ? or anyone else ? believes, a Supreme Court decision and a presidential election made the President's healthcare mandates the law of the land," Scott said at a news conference.

The governor said he still worries that the president's plan could "lead to less patient choice, worse care, and higher costs" but he can't "in good conscience deny the uninsured access to care." Scott stressed he won't simply deny new Medicaid recipients health insurance after the three years are up, but said he will spend that time measuring how the expansion impacts healthcare costs, quality and access.

Scott, a former CEO of the HCA hospital chain, entered politics in 2009 running national cable TV commercials criticizing the president's plan. Florida led the way in challenging the ACA in a lawsuit that went all the way to the Supreme Court. Scott also made the rounds on conservative talk shows repeatedly expressing concern that expanding Medicaid would put too much of a strain on Florida taxpayers.

At one point, he said the expansion would cost $26 billion over the next decade, but the state's health care agency slashed its estimate to $3 billion after backlash from lawmakers over how the initial figure was calculated. After Obama was re-elected, Scott toned down his rhetoric, signaling he wanted to work with federal health officials. He even flew to Washington to meet with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius last month to discuss the expansion.

Florida lawmakers must still sign off on Scott's decision, and the Legislature doesn't meet until next month.

"I am personally skeptical that this inflexible law will improve the quality of healthcare in our state and ensure our long-term financial stability," Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford said.

Angry conservatives said Scott owes his support base an explanation.

"I am flabbergasted. This is a guy who, before he was a candidate for governor, started an organization to fight 'Obamacare' in the expansion of medical entitlements. This is a guy who said it will never happen on his watch. Well, here it is," said Slade O'Brien, Florida director of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity.

Scott's announcement came hours after federal health officials said they plan to approve the state's longstanding request to privatize its Medicaid program statewide if they agree to beef up transparency and accountability measures. He said that decision signaled that feds were willing to work with the state to give them the flexibility they need.

The other six GOP governors who plan to expand the program are the leaders of Michigan, Ohio, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and North Dakota. So far 21 states plus Washington, D.C., plan to expand their Medicaid programs under the health care law. Fourteen states have said they'll turn it down, although the debate is still going in several of them. Another 15 are weighing options.

Under the federal law, states were given the choice of whether to expand Medicaid to people whose incomes equal 138 percent of the federal poverty level ? about $15,000 for an individual and $32,000 for a family of four.

Florida has one of the highest rates of uninsured residents in the country and some of the most stringent eligibility requirements. A family of three with income of $11,000 a year makes too much and single residents are not covered. The bulk of residents getting coverage under the Medicaid expansion will be childless adults.

The federal government's offer to cover most of the cost of expansion is much more generous than the roughly 50 percent matching rate that federal health officials currently pay for Medicaid. The state spends about $21 billion a year to cover roughly 3 million patients ? about half are children.

Florida hospital officials have said the state would receive about $26 billion from the federal government to pay for Medicaid expansion over the next decade. That would be a huge boon to hospitals that are losing other federal funding sources for uninsured patients under the federal health law.

Advocates said Medicaid expansion will bring about 54,000 new jobs to the state and have a significant impact on Florida's tourism and hospitality industries.

Hospital executives have said the expansion will significantly reduce the amount of money spent covering uninsured patients by hospitals, insurers and taxpayers by allowing patients to get coordinated treatment whenever they need it instead of waiting to go to the emergency room.

The new Medicaid population will get coverage under the privatization proposal that federal and state health officials are still hammering out. The program would allow for-profit providers to determine the health care for Medicaid recipients with the goal of saving money and improving services

Federal officials are insisting on enhanced accountability measures by requiring the state to use real-time data that evaluates whether the program is actually improving patient care along the way as promised, not just at yearly benchmarks. The state must also hold regular meeting with health advocates, patients and insurers and hire an ombudsmen to oversee the portion of the program that involves tens of thousands of elderly, long-term care patients.
