Wedding, Prom Season Spurs Closer Look at Limousine Safety

The cause of last weekend's fatal limo fire is still under investigation, but it's stirring up concern about the limo industry during it's most popular season.

Proms and weddings are underway in the Valley. Many people have booking limos for the events, but some are now questioning their safety.

Christina Garcia is preparing for her big day. She's busy finalizing last minute details, but there's one detail she's now rethinking.

Garcia says, "I am kind of nervous to step inside a limo."

She is not alone. Last weekend's tragic limo fire is on the minds of many. For Garcia, it may be reason enough to cancel her own wedding plans.

"I'm going to be wearing a really big you know princess dress. I'm kind of like what if that could happen to me and what if I can't get out?"

It's the peak season for the limousine industry. Companys are now doing all they can to make passengers feel safe.

Absolute Comfort Limousine co owner Paul Mendez says, "We do every possible preventative measure that we can."

At Absolute Comfort Limousine, every vehicle is inspected once a month.

"Everything. Drive lines, U joints, wheels, air pressure, making sure there are no cracks in the wheels. Fuel lines, brake lines," says Mendez.

Fire extinguishers are carried in every car. Drivers are required to make sure everything is working, including door locks, before hitting the road. The company has one limo, the same model as the one that burst into flames, that has a fifth door. It's an important feature in an emergency, allowing passengers to exit more quickly.

Mendez doesn't want the accident to ruin business. Hanford High senior Jordan Moran says it won't ruin his plans. He and a group of friends are taking a limo to their prom this Saturday.

"Something can happen at any time, you don't really know. If it happens, it happens but I'm not going to worry about it," says Moran.

We still don't know what caused last weekend's fatal fire. For now, limo company's say the best thing for all concerned customers to do is call in with any questions they have about safety procedures or inspections.
