United 787 Dreamliner emerges from Boeing factory, complete with golden head-to-tail 'swoop'

United 787 Dreamliner emerges from Boeing's Everett factory, complete with golden headtotail swoop

The first US-based 787 carrier is inching closer to its Dreamliner service launch. United Airlines celebrated the plane's rollout today at Boeing's Everett, Washington factory. The aircraft, which is set to begin international service later this year, received a custom livery, which includes a curved "swoop" -- which oddly enough appears to be the focus of design chatter. That may just be because the public has yet to take a peek inside, though we did have an opportunity to hitch a ride on ANA's variant last year, which has been flying throughout Japan since late 2011. Despite All Nippon's head start, United's flavor has garnered much attention domestically, marking a massive milestone in the Dreamliner's delayed launch. Hit up our source link below for a few more (exterior) views, courtesy of United.

From Sydney to London: How online Olympics evolved ...

NEW YORK (AP) ? At the turn of the millennium, online video at NBCOlympics.com meant still images taken from NBC's television feeds. Fast forward a dozen years, and every event is being shown live in the U.S. Here's a look at that evolution:

? 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. Video wasn't really video at all. Rather, NBCOlympics.com showcased a series of still images grabbed from NBC's video feeds. The exception was an experiment in which NBC piped delayed video of selected events down controlled cables to about 100,000 homes.

? 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. There was still no video of competition, live or delayed. The online video ban included highlight clips and interviews with athletes in Olympic venues. Local newscasts archived online had to be trimmed. The restrictions applied worldwide, though the International Olympic Committee allowed a Swiss rights holder, Television Suisse Romande, to stream live video to a closed network of high-speed DSL subscribers in three cities. Up to 2,000 subscribers could watch simultaneously.

? 2004 Summer Games in Athens. While Europeans began showing live online footage, NBC offered only delayed video. And it was limited to those who had Visa cards (though no money was charged). At NBCOlympics.com, real-time coverage of events didn't involve video, but scores, stats and written play-by-play descriptions updated every 30 seconds or so. Brief video highlights were available on cellphones through an AT&T premium service.

? 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy. NBC made live video available online for the first time, but it was limited to one hockey game. Delayed video was offered for top finishers and all U.S. participants in most events, with highlights for team sports such as hockey. No Visa authentication was needed. Cellphone video was expanded to other carriers.

? 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. NBC showed most events live online, but held back on popular sports ? track and field, gymnastics and swimming ? until after the events were shown on television. Users needed a subscription with a cable or satellite TV partner; Cablevision was the main holdout. The feeds were broadcast quality, though some didn't have on-air commentary. Text commentary appeared for a handful of events from partners such as Tennis.com.

? 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. In a case of going two steps forward, one step back, NBC limited live video to curling or ice hockey. Real-time coverage of other events were free of video. With luge, for instance, standings were updated after every run. Times and speeds of the competitors flashed in real time as they hit various interval points and the finish. For figure skating, past Olympians Peter Carruthers and Kristi Yamaguchi offered real-time text commentary.

? 2012 Summer Games in London. NBC offers live video of every competition and medal ceremony, not just on its website but through apps for Apple and Android phones and tablet computers. For gymnastics and track and field, multiple streams are available to focus on specific events within the venues. In 2008, multiple streams for those sports had been available on a delayed basis only. NBC, however, is opting not to show the opening and closing ceremonies live online.

Consumer confidence rises in July

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Consumer confidence unexpectedly rose in July as Americans were more optimistic about the short-term outlook than they were about their current conditions, according to a private sector report released on Tuesday.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes climbed to 65.9 from a upwardly revised 62.7 in June, topping economists' expectations for a decline to 61.5.

June was originally reported as 62.0.

Despite the improvement, confidence still remains at historically low levels, Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, said in a statement.

"While consumers expressed greater optimism about short-term business and employment prospects, they have grown more pessimistic about their earnings. Given the current economic environment - in particular the weak labor market - consumer confidence is not likely to gain any significant momentum in the coming months," said Franco.

The expectations index improved to 79.1 from 73.4, while the present situation index edged down to 46.2 from 46.6.

Consumers' labor market assessment was mixed as the "jobs plentiful" index slipped to 7.8 percent from 8.3 percent, while the "jobs hard to get" index also fell to 40.8 percent from 41.2 percent.

The view in six months from now was more optimistic, with 17.6 percent expecting to see more jobs, up from 14.8 percent in June.

But consumers were more concerned about price increases, with expectations for inflation in the coming 12 months rising to 5.4 percent from 5.3 percent.
